My (ongoing) College Admissions Story

sounds like you have having a grand time and making friends, LBad! So sweet how you miss your family too.

Hello @LBad96 ! How is it going?

Hey @MYOS1634!! Everything is going very well. And yourself?

 An update!! An update!!

@MYOS1634 okay, if you insist.

Seahawk Journal - September 18, 2015 (mid-September): This week was a fairly crazy week for me. I finished my first college paper, had my first college test, and had two class cancelations in UNI and English. My Algebra test went well, I feel. Everything seemed to come off well, but I just hope I didn’t make any silly mistakes that the professor catches. I’m still waiting on the grade. I’m doing very well in that class at the moment, which does surprise me a little bit considering math isn’t my forte. I love my UNI class and instructor, and I like the Seahawk Link that we have as well. Advanced English has the same people as my UNI class does. It’s certainly a challenging course. Concepts in Film, my only Friday class, is interesting as well. However, the award for my favorite class goes to my PoliSci class, Crime in the Cape Fear. I’m honestly enthralled by it. All the different cases in the area that I had never heard about before I got here. It’s all great.

Interestingly, I’ve gone to party every week so far. Frat parties are okay, but tons of cigarette smoking, which is bad for my asthma. They’re all closed off now, anyways. I’ve been to other parties and I certainly prefer those atmospheres. A lot more in line with the stereotype of Wilmington.

I still have yet to go to the beach since Beach Blast. Not because I don’t want to, but because others have had plans. Definitely hoping to go this weekend if it’s nice.

Lastly, I want to welcome all prospective students coming in for Seahawk Saturday; you’re all going to have an absolutely grand time. I hope that those of you seriously consider UNCW in your college search, if not decide to attend at the end of it all. One thing’s for sure: you’ll love the campus and the atmosphere. That’s a promise. #FeelTheTeal

Great update!

Thank you for the update. I hope you get to go to the beach soon.
Partying on weekends is fine… partying during the week isn’t. As long as you can walk back straight and don’t stay anywhere you see anyone on the verge of puking, you should be fine.
Academically, it sounds like you’re doing great. Considering your GPA in high school and the trouble you had with an AP class, it’s remarkable. KUDOS to you!
How"s your soccer team?
As soon as you see a B or under, go get a tutor and hog office hours.

@MYOS1634 as it turns out, I didn’t get to party this weekend…most people were at an off-campus rave that I was only aware of after it had started. But seeing that it’s nice today, I NEED THE BEACH!!!

It does seem like I’m doing great to start academically. Of course, I’m still waiting for some grades to come in, but this is far better than high school for me. So much more free time since most of my classes are in the afternoon. I will certainly get a tutor and hound all the services available the moment I see a B.

As for my soccer team…well, we’re a mixed back. Both of our first two games were decided by default; we won the first game and lost the second game. But when we played those teams in scrimmages, we won 5-1, then lost 8-1. If those results were actually calculated, our goal difference would stand at a -3. Ew.

Well, the soccer team is still in the process of finding itself, right?
I so hope you got to the beach today! Is it hard to get to or what?
SO GLAD you’re doing well academically and that you’re coming into your own in college.
Looking forward to the next update!

Glad it is all going well, I wish I could get that thorough of an update from my daughter  When we toured Wilmington everyone talked about how they didn’t get to the beach as much as they thought they would. You are so busy when you first get there, I would assume you will find more time in the spring.

@MYOS1634 @ITBgirl I unfortunately didn’t get to go to the beach…I’ve still only been there once since move-in. But I do need to go to the beach or downtown SOON. Like, I’m hungry for it lol.

Oh, and wonderful news: I got a 93 on my first ever college test!!! Algebra came off well indeed!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :)))))

Seahawk Journal - December 16, 2015 (end of the semester): My first semester of college is in the books. I finished it with a 3.332 GPA, which is a solid B+ average. A in UNI 101, A- in Algebra, B+'s in Political Science 495 and Advanced English 103, but only a C+ in Concepts in Film prevented me from qualifying for the Dean’s List. While I have done well, and certainly have improved since high school, this isn’t good enough. Next semester, I will be taking Econ 221 (Microeconomics), QMM 280 (Data Analysis for Business), French 101, Psych 105, and PED 101 (lecture + lab with only 2 total credits) - 14 credits in total. I have to work hard and improve to reach my target overall GPA of a 3.5.

The last time I updated this thread, I had partied every weekend. Well, after partying each of the first six weekends, I only did so once in the last twelve. I missed ten straight weeks of partying, a solid two months. Some were by personal choice, some were assessment of convenience and priorities, some were because the parties were busted before I had the chance to step out. More disappointingly, Beach Blast remains the only time I’ve gone to the beach since moving to Wilmington. Haven’t really found people to go with. I have many good friends, just not a set friend group, which I’m honestly a little frustrated with at times. If I had a solid friend group, I certainly would have hit the beach far more often. I also have yet to find a woman who I’ve truly clicked with. But don’t get it twisted: the social life here is perfect for me and I’ve found that making friends for me is nearly effortlessly simple. People always tell me how astonished they are that I seem to know a lot of people, haha!

I was pleased with the performance of our sports teams on campus. Our women’s soccer team made the NCAA tournament via an at-large berth, and defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks 2-0 in the first round (the program’s first-ever national tournament win, away from home even more impressively) before falling to the Virginia Cavaliers by the same score in the next round. Our volleyball team won their first-ever conference title, but fell to Chapel Hill in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Our men’s soccer team had a promising start, but sputtered near the end and lost in the conference quarterfinals to the Delaware Blue Hens. Men’s basketball was undefeated until this past weekend when they narrowly lost to the Georgetown Hoyas on national television in DC. They are now 5-2 at the time of writing, having lost to ECU of all bloody teams. But they’ve all done well. It’s great knowing people on all those teams, and I enjoy their company. I especially like talking to the women’s soccer players, haha!! My own intramural co-rec soccer team finished with a 2-3 record and made the second round of the playoffs.

Last Wednesday marked my first time in New Jersey since move-in. Campus was dead on Labor Day weekend in September and Fall Break in October, but I got to spend Thanksgiving in North Carolina with a friend’s family. I went to the countryside for the first time to have four days of Thanksgiving. It was a very different experience compared to suburban NJ. The countryside is beautiful, but seems boring. However, I met some fantastic people, and had tons of fun with the experience. I am forever grateful to them for opening their doors, arms, and hearts to me. All in all, my first semester was a blast, but I’m very relieved to finally be home able to relax for a whole month.

It’s unbelievable how much I’ve matured in just four months. I feel like a different person from how I was only six months ago. I’m forever grateful to UNC Wilmington for giving me this incredible opportunity, and forever proud and privileged to call myself a Seahawk.

WINGS UP!!!

Thanks for the great update, LBad! I am so impressed how you buckled down and focused on your studies… I only wish my son was doing so as well, lol. I suspect that core group of friends may just take more time. You are probably the envy of many who have less of a social life than you do! …and the girl thing definitely can take time. I would encourage low expectations and have patience with regard to that. I didn’t expect anything in that arena when I started college and I think that helped immensely.

What an impressive first semester - it’s clear UNC W made the right choice in admitting you. And going from 2.8 in high school to 3.3 in college is really excellent (and pretty uncommon, trust me :))
it sounds like you’ve adapted well socially too and adapted well, even though you were very far from home for the first time.
Many reasons to be proud
What’s NJ like after almost 5 months in NC?

@1203southview thanks so much!! I’ve heard from older HS friends at other colleges that it took them until January of their first year to find their closest friends. Hopefully everything will fall into place then and I’ll be able to finally have a core group of friends. As with girls, yeah, you’re right. I kinda expected everything to be an immediate improvment over HS - for the most part it was, but still haven’t really found anyone. It’ll happen when the time is right, though!

@MYOS1634 I’d like to think they made the correct choice in admitting me, but I also made the correct choice in attending UNCW. The adjustment to college was actually so much easier than I thought it was going to be - I seemed to fit in like a glove. But I guess that’s when you know you picked the right school!

NJ does seem different from when I left. For some reason. I thought my town was going to crumble to ashes without me being there, but the football team won the state championship a few weeks back! On the flip side, my town did have a “rich-out” against a rival town in October, which greatly disappointed me. Guess we’re not in the top ten snobbiest towns in NJ for nothing.

But it is a relief to be back. And, especially after almost three years, to finally be back in an apartment by ourselves in the town where we belong.

My son came home at Thanksgiving and said his bed felt so big/wide but so short! Lol, he has a twin xl in the dorm.

@1203southview where does your son go, again? And where are y’all from?

He goes to Columbia and we are from San Diego. He flew home for just the 3 days of Thanksgiving and unfortunately caught a cold so he was probably miserable going back. Finals start today so I haven’t heard much from him; can’t wait till he is home next Wednesday! Congratulations on a great first semester, LBad!

@LBad96: what’s up? It’s been a while since you updated us :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile:
