@MYOS1634 thank you for the compliments! and speaking of updates…
BIG UPDATE #9: After going through it in my sleep many times over, I have decided to forego my application to Pitt, and have applied to Fordham instead. Despite initially ignoring the fact that they gave me a fee waiver, I felt the urge to apply to such a prestigious university as Fordham. Thankfully, their EA deadline, which is normally November 1st, was extended till tomorrow - I couldn’t believe my luck! Also, my Pitt application had literally just been left for a month without submission despite my transcripts and LORs being submitted. It’s kinda a shame considering I was the one bombarding the Pitt rep with questions when she visited my school, but I figured that I would rather attend Fordham if those were my only two choices.
And having some thoughts about it, maybe applying for financial aid isn’t such a bad idea
You can apply for FA at Fordham. it’s a reach in any case… so who knows? And you certainly have better odds of receiving financial aid from Fordham (which offers some, sometimes) than from Pitt (which doesn’t have any for OOS applicants with your stats).
It’s really too bad the Pitt adcoms dropped the ball, especially since you were so interested and made sure they knew.
I don’t think your odds for a Fordham admission are very good, though, but since you have two college acceptances already, and at least one with scholarship… you know you’re going to college! (Do let us know if you get a scholarship from Stetson, too!)
A school in NYC where you’d have better odds is Pace.
@MYOS1634 very true. While my chances aren’t amazing at Fordham, I figured a rejection letter from Fordham would be better than being accepted to a darned branch campus of Pitt. My Pitt application was officially canceled yesterday, and it is a shame that they dropped the ball like that. I didn’t like the fact that you could only obtain a fee waiver if you had some “special status”. However, they did wish me the best of luck in the remainder of my college search. Congrats to all who were accepted to Pitt (I see a lot here on CC), and best of luck to those who are still waiting to hear back
@lookingforward nope, never found out exactly how big it is, but it IS big money.
BIG UPDATE #10: I have received a $23k/year scholarship from Stetson! This effectively eliminates Rider as a potential school of matriculation for next year.
BIG UPDATE #11: The first quarter ended last week. I have started my senior year with a 3.3 W and a 3.1 UW! A’s in Health, Gourmet Foods, and Ceramics; B+ in AP Euro (letter grade is a B, but the scale says it’s a B+; our school tacks on half a point more for good grades in AP and Honors courses); B’s in English and Environmental Science; and a C+ in Probability & Statistics. It’s the first time in a WHILE that I’ve started a school year so well. I’m definitely updating my EA schools about this. I just need to keep the work going
See how much home stability, circumstances that allow a more optimistic outlook, and, let’s not forget, hard work, can turn things around?
Congratulations, this is really good.
BIG UPDATE #12:I have received my first college rejection letter. Clark University notified me that I was “unable to gain admission at this time” last night. Although this was my first rejection, I wasn’t upset at all about it because they had been my second-to-last choice. What did surprise me was my family saying they had never heard about it before now, especially considering I had received mail from them and had shown interest as far back as last spring. And although I hadn’t shown much recent interest, I was a little surprised to be denied by a school that I had considered a match. Whatever, they rejected me because they weren’t a great fit for me anyways
So my admissions record is now 2-1. In soccer terms, that is six points out of a possible nine in the first three games. Not bad, if I do say so myself
I’d also like to add that a classmate and good friend of mine was denied by Clark as well. It had been one of his top three choices, so he wasn’t too pleased about receiving that decision.
^Really too bad. I did think Clark was a match, but you never know… So many factors play into these decisions!
You already have two solid safeties with scholarship… and quite a few more decisions to go!
Some should come out tomorrow or soon, right?
@MYOS1634 very true, I’m indeed happy that I have two great choices with scholarships already at this point. I’m expecting to hear back from UMASS and maybe Hofstra tomorrow, with Fordham also a definite for this week. BIG week ahead that could (possibly) go a long way in determining the next four years of my life.
Clark’s rejection of me last Friday didn’t really matter that much; although it was a match, I didn’t really bother to show any significant interest because the social/athletic scene is very poor. However, it was the first of three straight rejections. Fordham denied me on Monday, followed by Northeastern on Tuesday. Neither of those rejections bothered me that much either, considering they were reaches. However, I still hadn’t heard back from my top choice yet. I saw that a lot of people were already getting letters from them while lurking around on CC (as well as the type of students that were getting admitted), which only made me even more nervous.
And then, some relief came at last.
Quinnipiac University accepted me on Thursday with a yearly scholarship of $13,000. The acceptance letter couldn’t have come at a better time, as I was VERY anxious for a couple of days. I thought this entire week was going to be a huge bust. But thankfully, I ended the long week on a high note and a now-increased level of confidence. Although I’m still waiting to hear back from UMass, I’m very pleased to be 100% sure that I’ll be leaving New Jersey next year.
Current admissions record: 3-3
Rider University - accepted, certainly will NOT attend
Stetson University - accepted
Clark University - rejected
Fordham University - rejected
Northeastern University - rejected
Quinnipiac University - accepted
Order of preference of remaining schools:
University of Massachusetts Amherst
Bentley University
Syracuse University (a rather distant third)
Quinnipiac University
University of North Carolina at.Wilmington
SUNY Binghamton
Stetson University
Hofstra University
Rider University
Still have a two-day school week ahead before the holidays. Hoping to hear good news from UMASS very soon!
Even though you applied very early, UMass has no order, no rhyme or reason. I still think you will be deferred for Ea and will have to wait for decision closer to the middle of April. You might be admitted but not directly into ISOM. SAT’s are strong but GPA is way too low for ISOM. Don’t be discouraged because as stated before, my S was deferred and was admitted very late last year and was even given a small scholarship of 6K per year.
@bucky0926 I’ve had that feeling ever since I saw the profiles of those who were admitted EA, tbh. However, in a strategic move, I also put down “Undecided” as a 2nd choice major. If I am deferred, I REALLY hope that I won’t have to wait until mid-April.
I’ve shown as much interest as I possibly could, despite not being able to visit (calling multiple times between the spring and summer, being one of the first to sign up for a regional rep visit to my school in October, asking a lot of questions during the visit, sending her a thank-you email shortly after the visit, and calling her to reaffirm my interest a few weeks back) - do you think they’ll take that into account at all? Their CDS says that they DO consider demonstrated interest, after all.
Demonstrated interest is considered but its minimal at best. The first thing they look at is GPA and the second is test scores. Your GPA is low for UMass but as you mentioned you have a very good reason for this. I feel they are going to keep you on the backburner till they see all their applicants and then make up their minds, thus my feeling that you won’t know till mid April (like my son). What you need to start wrapping your head around is will it be worth it to attend Umass but as a undecided hoping to gain admission to ISOM. My S, who is in a RAP for undecided’s who are interested in a business major, said that a lot of the kids are no longing trying for ISOM as you need like a 3.7 to be considered for admission and many of them did not do that well. Yes its a great business school but its also very hard to get in. Would you be better off going elsewhere and then transferring? Would it make sense to just go elsewhere? We went forward with UMass because there reputation for sports management is unparalleled- number one or two in the country. UMass business is no where close to that, so can you get that great business education but somewhere else? Only you can make up your mind about that. The problem with being admitted that late is that it makes it almost impossible to go to the accepted students day(s). If you could run up there and go see it it might help you make up your mind one way or another.
