@bucky0926 that sounds like a great plan. My parents agreed to it today; visiting Quinnipiac for either of their ASDs on Saturday 3-28 or Sunday 3-29, then UNCW’s Seahawk Preview Day AKA Dare 2 Soar on Saturday 4-18. BUT…we’re sending my enrollment and deposits to UNCW in March, tentatively, so that I don’t have to scramble pay the deposits in the case that I don’t change my mind (I probably won’t). Hofstra is officially eliminated.
Get that deposit money together and put it somewhere safe but don’t send it in (unless its fully refundable) until you have seen both school. Do you really want to be stuck because you put up the money for a school you no longer like? You have until May 1st, so take the time afforded to you and see both. Better to make an informed decision then jump quickly. Who knows you might get big bucks form one of your deferred schools and then the whole equation can change.
@bucky0926 that’s a very good point. But what if my final choice is still the school I’ve been intending to go to for the last month? Housing is first-come, first-served, and if I wait until May 1st to choose UNCW, then I lose out on my preferred dorm…and might have to look for a new roommate. I wouldn’t go to Binghamton regardless, and four of my classmates have already committed to Syracuse. But part of me would actually be a little upset if I got into Bentley with a hefty scholarship (say $30k a year), lol!
You know I didn’t even consider housing arrangements which are crucial for a good experience. Call UNCW and see if they have a program where you can actually speak to students. I know Buffalo called my son a number of times looking to speak to him and I thought it was a good idea especially if you can snag someone who you click with (they will tell you the good, the bad and everything in between). See if they have a virtual tour of the campus and do that. Since money is a consideration and UNCW is less expensive I think you might have already made up your mind. Look, trust yourself and go with your gut instinct, regardless of what anyone else says. You are a smart guy and know which school will suit you best just do as much homework as possible. Sometimes its the devil in the details that make or break a decision. In many ways picking a college is just a big crap shoot. Keep us posted.
Can you put housing deposit down only at UNCW? Housing deposits are usually refundable as far as I know, but check.
@lbad96 Glad to see your story nearing a happy ending! QU does refund deposits. No idea about UNCW, however. We did put a housing deposit down for my son at Penn State, primarily because they’re notorious for not-so-fun supplemental housing. Early deposits avoid that problem. While he’ll most likely attend PSU, I’m willing to lose that $330 if he gets into one of the late deciding schools or changes his mind before May 1. (lbad knows about changing one’s mind!)
@bucky0926 My UNCW admissions rep did mention that I can speak to a current student over the phone, but I’m unsure of when that will take place. I just emailed her about it. I did do a virtual tour of the campus, and it is very beautiful. I have already made my mind, hence why I want to send the deposits in as soon as possible. Thank you for the compliment; I do pride myself on being well-researched.
@mommdc I would have to enroll before putting down a housing deposit, and neither are refundable.
@brucemag QU does indeed refund deposits. That’s a smart idea about the early deposit for PSU; has he made any announcement on Facebook as to where he’s going yet? I know that I wouldn’t make any official announcement, not even to my UNCW friends, until I actually visit that school. I’m sure my parents, namely my mother, feel the same way about whether or not I get into Bentley!
Quick update: Hofstra gave me their Dean’s Scholarship of $12,500 a year.
Oh well, still not going.
Yeah at 12,500 per year still too expensive for what they offer.
Hi lbad96! Fyi my D goes to Quinnipiac and you don’t get better housing if you pay the deposit early there. So if you wanted you can just wait to put a deposit there until you see where you like best.
Also they have a student for the day program which you can attend class and other things with a current student. That was what really solidified it for her although the other tours and acceptance student day were wonderful. But the student for the day gave her the perspective of student population, dorm living, etc. I also hung out and worked remotely from the library and lunch room so I got to observe as well. They were/are very nice and helpful people… students and staff.
@bucky0926 100% agreed.
@cakeisgreat hey! I actually see you on the QU forum all the time lol. My parents still seem to have some reservations about sending me far away (concerning my own self), so we’ll see what happens.
BIG UPDATE #19: There’s a SMALL chance that I might not be attending UNC Wilmington after all. My dad wants me to attend, and I did sign up for Seahawk Preview Day as soon as I saw the invitation. But there’s a catch: he says that I have to show improvements in judgment and decision-making before he’s 100% comfortable with me living a plane ride away. While I certainly understand where he’s coming from, I’m not too sure how I feel about that personally. My mind keeps going back to when I didn’t get to transfer schools during my junior year (I really hated the people in my hometown and wanted to get out so desperately). I was very angry with my parents. Even though everything worked out in the end, I still say, “God forbid we see another situation like that, or even worse”.
Any opinions or suggestions?
Does this mean you have to show improvements in judgement and decision making by May 1? Did something happen that made him question your judgment?
@redpoodles Basically. Apparently, I’m not the best at making snap decisions. I’m just really worried that I might mess up somewhere and I wouldn’t be allowed to attend the school I want
So, you mustn’t mess up for 6 weeks. Have you misbehaved lately or done something spectacularly stupid larely? Have your grades dropped after you got your admissions?
Elaborate a bit please.
Tell your dad you’re going to do “executive functioning” homework:
http://www.amazon.com/Executive-Functioning-Workbook-Teens-Unprepared/dp/1608826562
And perhaps sign a contract with academic goals, ie., first semester you need to have a 2.3, second semester a 2.5 or they’ll make you come home (that’s MUCH HARDER to get in college than in High School - remember that you’ll be taking 4-5 AP-equivalent classes per semester).
@MYOS1634 it’s not that I do anything spectacularly stupid, nor do I misbehave. My grades are fine as well. My parents do always stress the little things, though. It’s simple stuff like forgetting where things go or things like that.
Do the “executive functioning” homework (buy the book and do it).
You’ll “forget where things go” regardless of where you attend. It’s part of ADD.
And they can’t keep you from your ADD… even if you’re 1 hour away, what are they going to do? Remind you to do your homework? Bring you stuff you forget?
You’ll be in college. On your own. And you’ll learn from making mistakes, like all freshmen. Register with disability services, check into the tutoring center right away, if you need accomodations be proactive and ask for them as soon as you deposit. This will help you more than anything that your parents could do to “cure” or “prevent” or “offset” your ADD.
@MYOS1634 I was never diagnosed with ADD…
Well, nevertheless, get that executive functioning homework book :p. And you DO have some sort of disability since you got test accomodations, so make sure to take all necessary measures at college. That shows responsibility and maturity.
@MYOS1634 point taken. I just am really worried about being forced to stay in the tri-state against my own will.
