My ongoing journey to get a higher SAT score:]

Hi everyone, like many of you I'm here to improve my SAT scores throughout the summer and because I somewhat lack the discipline to sit and study for the SAT's (for whatever reason once I start I end up falling asleep o.o) I have decided to discipline myself by making me post here what I've done to study for the SAT daily. I have about 4 months to improve my SAT score from a 1630 to a 2100 and I have these books:
BB (2nd Edition)
PR
Barrons

Sadly, I don't really know how to study so I would have to ask some questions...
Are there any other review books I should get?
What vocabulary list should I memorize? (when I search the forums people give different answers..)
What sections of the review books are really really helpful to my score and should read?

A lot of people are talking about Xiggi's method to improve their scores drastically. My question for that would be how should I divide up my time for the first 1-2 tests that are untimed and open book? (I did two sections that took me around 2 hours, yikes :[)
Tomorrow I shall post up my schedule of studying since that's when I'm starting summer school so that I can estimate the time. During the end of today I would post up what I've done to study for the SAT and please critique it... thanks :]

I suggest that you set a more reasonable goal.

Yes, I know that 1630 to a 2100 is a bit unreasonable but its my habit.
I tend to do that so that I land around that range aha.

Excuse me, but are you a rising senior or junior?

rising senior
I was too focused on my AP classes during junior year so I couldn’t prepare.

Now, that goal makes a bit more sense. However, I still think that 2100 requires a lot of changes in your current study habit as explained in the original thread.

I will add more content b/c my advice seemed to be very brisk and not economical, making answers one-by-one.

CR: READ A LOT. Focus on the two linchpins: main idea and topic, and other peripheral elements such as symbolism, imagery, tone, etc. Get Rocket Review Revolution or Barron’s 2400.
W: Practice A LOT. Use Princeton Review’s Grammar Smart 2/E
M: I think you are good at math. I can feel the “aura.” :)

What specific changes should I make? I really want to study effectively to get to that range…
Thanks benhpark for the advice :]
How many hours a day should I be studying?

When you have the right books, there is no effective way in studying. To gain a high score mainly requires persistence and willpower. I can chat on MSN as well; I am not that good in CR but I can give you helpful advices for Writing. My hotmail account is asiankungfugeneration at hotmail dot com

==Edited==
Devote every hour you can squeeze out of your summer schedule for the SAT.

I’ll make sure to add you on MSN, mine starts with deb (just so that you don’t think its some spammer or anything).

A 2100 is a reasonable goal. With dedication and practice you will get there.

^ Why only 2100? I know of people who have jumped from 1630 to 2200-2300+ scores.
It is not a good idead to set a limit on you ultimate score.

^ It’s a good idea to always set goals and limits before you start. Doing so is a golden rule before anyone starts on projects, goal-directed activities, etc.

CR: BB and Direct Hits (a vocabulary book)
M: Gruber’s WB is reccommended here; I myself will be using it over this summer

^ I guess we have our different opinions.

Use Grammatix. I can gaurantee you that u will raise your score a few hundred points just by reading through it. It is without doubt, the best SAT prep book written. It is just a guide to be used with BB. It doesnt have practice tests. It gives you vital stratagies (just reading the CR stratagies immediately jumped me from 650 to 750+ CR) and shows you they work by applying them to BB questions.

Direct Hits, Gruber, and Grammatix?
For Gruber, the official SAT guide or just the math workbook?
I’m not sure if I can buy all of these books if they’re expensive xD

Is it reasonable to do half of a practice test in one day without any time limit and open book, and the other half the next?

Today:
I began by writing an essay and doing about half of a practice test. Turns out that without time pressure I get many more questions right. Tomorrow I will find out how much time I can devote to the SAT everyday and make sure that I stick to it. Everyone’s posts have been very helpful to me and thank you for your advice! Tomorrow I shall start reading grammatix and do the rest of a practice exam. I have way too much to catch up and I admit that I’m a bit scared that I don’t have enough time to improve as much as I want to.

I wonder…
would you let me join in on your journey? I am taking the SAT in October so…3 months and I currently have a 2050. My ultimate goal? A 2200. Realistically? I dunno. 2150? The breakdown is M-620 (eek), W-700 (10 Essay), CR-730. The math is going to be my main focus, but I’ll brush up on writing (any hints on how to do this?), and I don’t know if I’ll bother on CR…What threw me off on the June one was the vocab & I don’t really feel like studying vocab. Anyway, to get my 2200…I estimate M-700, W-750, CR-750. Is this plausible? It’s unlikely. But I can dream, right? I’m hoping to devote at least 30 minutes daily to SAT and one day every week (maybe every 2 weeks) I’ll take a full practice test. I also have trouble staying motivated, so I was wondering if I too could post updates here? We can work together to keep each other on track & give advice if we have any. :)

Oh- as far as books I have…Just the Barron’s SAT Guide. I’m planning on getting the Gruber’s Math Workbook. What is this Grammatix book?
