ok...well this is just a little rant, you can agree with me, or not agree with me, dont really care. Ive been on CC for about a year now and have grown addicted to it as i search for the right school for me. All in all, its a great site so see people express similar concerns that you have about applying and everything else.

Now I have noticed 1 huge flaw, and it does not have to do with CC itself, it has to do with some people on CC, particularly those that linger on the chances page. We have some very very jealous and bitter people on this site who seem to lose track of the purpose of CC which is to offer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. I say this because i often see people completely bash the EC's/grades/scores of other posters for really no apparent reason. It almost seems like there is something that they have that the other person is jealous of or wishes they have, and because they dont they try to just to bring you down.

Heres the fact: 9/10 times on this site, you are hearing from people who are in the SAME boat as you and who know jack about whether you will get in to college or not, and im not gonna lie ive failed to realize this from time to time. When responding to my chances threads, people often think its all about your grades and SAT's which it isnt. They dont know how to weight your EC's or courses, so they really just compare your SATs to the college's average.

Do what in your heart you feel you wanna do and dont let these people discourage you from applying!

its basically a site for nerds, and people who need advice for school. you're going to get arrogant buttholes in here. just gotta tolerate it = )

Then why do you keep asking for chances on your threads, and bumping them, if these people don't know anything besides comparing SAT scores?

Seems quite hypocritical.

Could it be that he had a realization?!?!!?!

Often the constructive criticism are the worst replies, because they offer absolutely no insight and just offer information that the OP already knows like "write great essays and you will have a great chance." NO ****.

Heres the fact: 9/10 times on this site, you are hearing from people who are in the SAME boat as you and who know jack about whether you will get in to college or not, and im not gonna lie ive failed to realize this from time to time.

There are many people on here who go to good schools that have great college counselors who have kept scattergrams for years. There is not much of a mystery who will get in where except for schools like HYP that have so many qualified candidates it does become a mystery who they accept. And even there, we know someone with a 2150 and no amazing hook has little chance.

Many here have argued over time that the uplifting messeges--"apply, never give up"...SATs really don't matter"....They'll see past your 3.4"--are helpful. To me, if you want that, ask your parents and friends. They can assure you that Harvard couldn't pass a gem like you down just because you get a 680cr and just missed top 5% of your class.

If people post for an opinion, they should be given an honest one. But it's up to them to figure out who the credible posters are.

very true but what the problem is here is that people focus too heavily on grades and scores and disregard anything else in the post and even then they dont really understand what the middle 50% means.

Doogie, what does the middle 50% mean. At he top 25 or so colleges, half of the class is filled before they get to unhooked applicants. Recruited athletes, urms, legacies, development, prodigies--that's half the class before they get to the unhooked. The special groups are very likely to have lower than average scores. This means the average unhooked candidate needs to have scores at or above the 75% to be a real contender.

Just read through the ED results and see how HYPSM etc. outright rejected vals with 2350s. Let's not even mention all of the deferred, the vast majority of who will receive rejection letters in a few weeks.

I'm among those with good college counseling. But you do the math. Add the athletes, urms (30% alone here), legacies (8-15% at ivies, even higher at other top schools) development (schools are hoping for 3-5%)....what's the mystery.

Unfortunately, below the very top it's even more dug in. The next 15 schools are even more concerned about top sports teams and alumni money. They take far more legacies. Far more people buying their way in.

athletes plus urms are above 30% at most ivies.

So to readdress youre original post, IMO, people shouldn't post if they don't want honesty. Again, it's up to them to figure out who has a clue and who does not.

and u cant predict accurately at most ivies anyway.

And you cant get honesty on here...what you get on here is people who can be applying to the same school and who sometimes try to discourage you from applying because they feel 1 person is gonna hurt their chances...people get weird and vicious on this board.

You do sometimes get the knowledgable person, but most of the time u get those people who r just looking for every flaw imaginable and overlook everything good on ur app....its not honesty

Couldn't disagree more. The decision to apply should never be put in anyone's hands but your own. In my experience though, a lot of honest and knowlegable answers are found here.

Are you sure you're not just tired of people seeing your own situation differently than you see it? Your posts are all defensive. Maybe CC isn't for you, shut down the computer and await reality.

What really annoys the hell out of me is when CCers say stupid things like (this isn't to me, just to a lot of posts I've seen) "Well you're a URM so you're going to get in." and completely disregard that the person might be getting in because they're top of their class, have extraordinary ECs and a superb SAT/ACT score.

But anytime someone mentions they're hispanic, native american, african american or east indian its always the same thing - "you'll get in because you're a minority".

pfft, nobody here knows exactly how much weight being a URM has on your application, at that particular school, and that particular situation - its so aribtrary, only the person reviewing the application knows for sure.

I'm not a URM, but it really annoys me when people say that.

Sorry, I took away from the topic, I think :p
