My Orientation 101 experience

To everyone going to the future Orientation Sesh’s, you do NOT have to go to the workshops if you do not wish to. You do NOT have to attend the terrible/wack/boring events that they plan late at night (i.e. Club Jamba and Carpe Noctem).

I can’t stress this enough. Go out to Westwood and chill with your friends that are or are not from Orientation. Or go plan out your classes in advance. I had multiple ask me why I just disappeared after the Cabaret because people did not know you can pretty much just bounce anywhere you want to go. But don’t be dumb about it and miss all your morning appointments, you can miss your workshops but not the appointments–in most cases.

Make orientation the most fun you can and just use it to:

 1. Sign up for classes
 2. Find out where all the cool spots are to study/chill/relax/eat
 3. Find out where you can eat late at night and everything
 4. Explore the campus

Don’t expect to make life long friends, in most cases.

And I highly advise all incoming freshmen to plan ahead and don’t go in there open minded like me because I began to stress out when everything I wanted to take kept having scheduling conflicts or closed/full classes.

themoonisdown: That could work if the classes stay open. If they fill up, you may need to be a little flexible.

Good advice eddylee, just leave if you don’t want to do some of the garbage they have planned.

… the events though they might be boring, introduce you to new people.

yes, you might not get the easiest/most effective professor on bruinwalk… but we’re freshmen.

go to the events, go with your group, be social… meet new people… have fun.

It doesn’t seem like classes are filling up left and right though… One of the classes I was going to take is full, but I knew that would happen soon after enrollment began for returning students.

True, but stuff happens. Just to be safe, have a back up. Chances are you won’t need it.

I’m planning on getting there by 10:30 AM ish because of timing conflicts. Will that be a bhig problem?

nope, that’s around when orientation really starts, before that we just sit around and wait for everyone to show up.

is there a place for a bath? what’s it like?

Haha dang, it’s only been a year, but I feel so nostalgic when reading this thread. Orientation was goooooooooooood times :)

Makes me wonder, I don’t have a laptop but I have an ipod touch. Did you see anyone using that to sign up for classes?

^ ahahahaha. Signing up for classes with iPods… Wow, technology is amazing.

Sure is! So, anyone know if it’s possible?

zanglebangle: At 10:30 we had already walked down to Moore Hall for a lecture, so if they’re not at the meeting place you should look there and ask the orientation counselors to find your group. Shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

ww2sniper: No, there are only showers. Sorry. :(

oyster: I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Try it and report back.

You probably could sign up for classes on your ipod touch, but at orientation you go to your OC’s room to sign up and there is no Wi-Fi so you need an ethernet cable and I dont know if they make those for ipods…

Oh, thanks! I guess I’ll have to wait my turn. Also I know at Berkeley, Regents scholars can get into any class whetherbit is full of not. Does anyone know if it’s the same for LA? Perhaps I should make a new thread asking this

No they don’t, but they will have priority in later quarters.

if you have a phone that can go online it might work, i thought about using mine to sign up a couple quarters ago because i had class at the time, but then decided to just bring my laptop along…
