my own company and extracurriculars

Hi,

I run my own company doing a quite complicated thing: selling a self-developed output interface system for homecockpits and the necessary electronics.

Now, I am just going through the CommonApp and I am not really sure how to include my company into it. I figured it's an extracurricular activity, but it's neither paid work, nor really career oriented... What category should I choose?

Then, in the first field (Position Held, Honors Won, Letters Earned, or Employer), what should I enter? Something like: "founder and owner of ARCOMbyMarc"?

in the brief description, I'll simply include: selling a self-developed output interface system for homecockpits and the necessary electronics

and then I'll elaborate on my company with the 1000 characters...

What do you think, does my company even belong there?

Thanks,
Marc

I think you should write an essay about this. Tell them how did you started the company and how does it work.

well, but isn’t it also an extracurricular? It’s definitely not school-related and I spend the majority of my free-time on this profitable “hobby”…

If you would go to a business school, your company experience will be a plus among all other applications. But instead writing an essay about the world crisis and how would you save the world, it will be better to write an essay about your tiny company, and what you learned for your company. Your perspective of your company, parents perspective. You should say to the admission officer than you are different than others and to pick you instead picking all other. In your admission application you should be smart and use anything you have. Your company will be a big plus for your application,.

Cheers

yes, but my question is how to fill out the Extracurricular, it’s not about whether it’s an advantage or not…

Yes absolutely, in fact put this first. If you really spend a lot of time on it, it is considered an “extra-curricular” and one that really stands out.

As for the category, it really is your call. You could definitely put it under Technology, otherwise I would put it under Other.

I think you should do as you mentioned for the positions held and description.

Good luck! :)

Uh, this isn’t an ordinary “I program apps” or I made a little money…

Start by calling it an EC. “selling a self-developed output interface system for homecockpits and the necessary electronics” is a good start. Rather than just selling, I’m assuming you actually marketed, right? The word change implies a bit more than taking orders.

A good tight paragraph in Addl Info might do it. I suspect this is the sort of activity that deserves some words on its own. If you put it in the essay, try to convey your enthusiasm and dedication along with the regular kid, "fun to have at this college"aspects. Go for it.
