Okay, so I have immigrant parents who are incredibly strict. My class is going on a field trip to the Catching Fire premiere and my mom and dad won't let me go. Their reasoning is that the cinema is not a good place and lots of bad things happen there. I really want to go and have been looking forward to it for such a long time. How can I convince them to let me go?

Let me guess, you are a girl and asian?

I would try to explain to them that going with serve as a bonding experience for you and your class. Also treasure them that you’ll be safe because you will be with your class.

This is the reason my parents don’t let me go to the movies either
My classmates talk about how great it will be to get wasted in college and I’m just here like “ALL I WANT IS TO WATCH A MOVIE LEGALLY WITH PEOPLE AROUND”

What kind of bad things are said to happen at the movie theater? Are we talking about sex and drugs, murder, or…?

Technically speaking…all of which have happened at movie theaters

Good guess, yes, I’m an Asian girl

Pretty much all of those things. And the Colorado shooting terrified them

To be fair, I haven’t stepped foot in a movie theatre since the Colorado shooting. I know it sounds overly paranoid but there are tons of sickos out there and copy cats aren’t unheard of. :/

To be fair, people also die everyday from every type of reason imaginable, so I guess you better just lock yourself in your house and hope a tree doesn’t fall on your roof. Jk, preamble, jk. I mean it’s true…but I am kidding. But if you’re paranoid, it’s kind of ironic you’re a high school student who isn’t home schooled…because of all the places to be paranoid about…

Anywho. OP, I suggest trying to talk to your parents and at least trying to get through to them. Tell them that you’ll have to have freedom at some point or another and it’s better to go to the movie theater with your class than alone.

??? what the frick
i wanna be in that class

LOL

I will try to get through to them, but if doesn’t work I guess I’ll just have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

Thanks to everyone that replied.

Tell them it’s an all-girls trip.

I haven’t stepped foot in a theatre since the Abe Lincoln shooting…

Yeah, I get the whole “people die all the time” spiel - I used to criticize people who refused to fly after 9/11 - but I guess I just really love traveling. I’m not a big fan of movies to begin with, lol.

I’ll go watch a movie (so long as Adam Sandler isn’t in it) once I can be sure that there aren’t guns in the hands of anyone who has ever been treated for a mental illness. In my mind, there’s a difference between accidentally being crushed by a tree and intentionally being killed by someone who had access to an assault rifle who also happened to have been prescribed antipsychotics or antidepressants when it could have very well been prevented. Crazies shouldn’t have guns. Period.

Actually, its funny that you mentioned the tree thing, CE527M, my parents paid to get a tree cut down in our yard because it was getting too tall and leaning too close to our house about two weeks ago, lol.

I mean, the atmosphere in Boston lately has been pretty tense. There was a record low turnout for the 4th of July celebrations this year with the Boston Pops (which is a HUGE event) because of the Marathon. I imagine that I’ll eventually get over some of my tentative reservations about certain places but as of right now, I don’t think I’m missing too much.

@KaiLh17 - LOL, wait, does theatre imply “old timey” because I thought you could spell theater either way. Oh, but the Abe Lincoln shooting still has me shaking, bruh, I feels you.

Sorry - I’m a pretentious drama kid, we all spell it ‘re’. It’s actually just the British way of spelling it though, I use ‘re’ when describing plays or musicals and ‘er’ for movies.

@preamble1776, the worst thing you can do to let these domestic terrorists get to you is change your lifestyle out of fear. When you do that, they win.

Also, I agree with you very much on gun control.

the majority of people with mental illnesses wouldn’t intentionally hurt someone; the ones who shouldn’t have guns are actually the socio/psychopaths who are capable of committing murder of innocent lives. but your paranoia seems a little cray cray preamble r u ok

I agree with clementines2016. One out of four Americans suffers from mental illness. Most of them never commit any kind of crime.

Maine posts again in a highschool thread!

It’s rarer than a lunar eclipse but more often then the longhorns winning 10 games

:) The team is doing better lately…
