My parents do not file taxes because they have A2 visas. Do I have to answer these Questions?

How much did your Parent 1 (father/mother/stepparent) earn from working (wages, salaries, tips, etc.) in 2014?
How much did your Parent 2 (father/mother/stepparent) earn from working (wages, salaries, tips, etc.) in 2014?

Should I just put $0 as the amount, while saying my parents will not file taxes?

Thanks in advance!

First you should probably tell us what you are filling out.

Next, I don’t see any mention about taxes in these questions. The questions are asking about earnings based on working. Wherever they are working. If you are applying for financial aid, you need to disclose personal information, including wages because financial aid is based on income and assets whether you pay taxes or not.

You’re confusing “income subject to U.S. taxation” with “income”.

Also, the question isn’t asking about just the income earned in the U.S., but ALL income your parents earned GLOBALLY.

If your family is on an A2 diplomatic visa, your parents don’t owe US income taxes, but your parents obviously earn income, because I very much doubt you all are living in a homeless shelter, subsisting on free soup, wearing donated clothing, and relying on hitchhiking to get around.

Only if you want to be considered for FA.

How much did they EARN? You need to put that amount down regardless of your visa status, where the money was earned, or whether you will or won’t file taxes.

So…what did they EARN…put that in those spots.

If you are trying to fill out the FAFSA, that is generally for U.S. Citizens or Green Card Holders.

What form are you filling out?

Hi. Thanks for all the replies. I am filling out FAFSA. I am US citizen, but my parents are both an A2 visa.

This is what happens for me:
http://m.im ■■■■■■■■■■■■■

“The following error(s) have occurred:
You reported that the student’s parents will not file an income tax return, but the amount you reported for Parent 1 (Father’s/Mother’s/Stepparent’s) and Parent 2 (Father’s/Mother’s/Stepparent’s) income appears to be over the minimum amount required for filing a tax return. Change the answer to tax return status or income amount for father and mother.”

In the first question, I deleted the amount for my parent 1 for obvious reasons.

?
Why did you delete the amount for Parent 1?

Fafsa online has some error checking and you’ve run into one of the things it checks. Yours is an unusual situation and trips the error checking. Did you read the Note under the error. It appears there should be a way to confirm you are entering things correctly, but submitting the fafsa that way isn’t going to result in an EFC. You’re going to have to contact the school’s FA office and explain.

Mom2, I suspect the OP deleted it for privacy reasons.

^^
Oh, I misunderstood. I thought he meant that he deleted one parent on his FAFSA. lol

Thanks for all the answers. It turns out there is another question where it asks for Untaxed Income slaps self

I put the amount my parents make on that question, while leaving the other question about taxed income at $0 (also leaving the answer about filing taxes as “no”).

The fafsa went through and I got my financial aid. Thanks again everyone!
