My parents feel sorry for me...

Thanks. That’s good to hear.

good luck to you

Congratulations! Going away for your freshman year of college is irreplaceable; be sure to go to Tufts, no matter what your parents say after they see it. Never be ashamed of your immigrant parents when you leave the nest for college- they have a lot of worldly experience some otherwise more sophisticated people, parents or students, lack. Follow up on the Tufts specific advice others have given, it sounds like you picked a great school for your Chinese parents to feel comfortable with. It sounds like you will do well at balancing American and family worlds, like others, I was impressed with your #25 post. Remember, too, that when you get around to discussing things with friends in college, you will find parents of all cultures share some of the same frustrating characteristics. All kids suffer from parental expectations and misconceptions, only the details differ. Good luck and enjoy Boston.

Djvu, have a great time there…if you are still reading, I think you are

amazing! Glad to hear your parents are on board!

You should be proud of the list of schools that accepted you - all very prestigous. I think Meredith Viera went to Tufts. Do your parents watch the Today show? I’m sure there are other notable alums they might recognize as well to acclimate them to your choice. Congratulations!

Wow I can’t believe this thread is still alive. So to update everyone:

We visited tufts on one of the open house days. My parents were impressed (but still kinda skeptical) after getting on the Redline by how polite the people in boston were in general. Coming from nyc, we were not used to subway workers who bothered to give good directions, and ask us if we needed any more help AFTER we got through the turnstile. There was less pushing and shoving in general, even though the subways were very crowded.

Then when we got off at davis square, we were all impressed by the clean neighborhood. The walk to tufts was nice too. It’s a nice residential, clean neighborhood, so my parents don’t have to worry about my getting robbed often.

So finally the tour - the campus looked better than I expected. I liked the trees…the atmosphere was just friendly and scholarly. The petals that were floating around made the scene like something from the movie “memoirs of a geisha”. XD The tour guide was really friendly. My parents liked the campus as well. A week or two AFTER the visit my mom made a spontaneous comment on “how nice the view of boston must be at night. A lot of students will probably sit outside at night, etc”. She said this in the middle of watching tv, so I can tell she’s been thinking about tufts, and the nice impression has stuck. My dad was especially impressed with library. He’s never seen so many books in one place. When we were walking about the library a girl who was studying looked up, saw us, and smiled. I thought that was nice.

As for tufts being unknown to my parents, it’s not as unknown anymore. They’ve started paying attention to tufts alumni in nyc. My mom went to see a dentist in chinatown the other day, and noticed that he went to tufts. He assured her it was a good school too.

I think the visit was very important. My parents are definitely happy with my choice now. I’ve been telling them about the semi small school atmosphere, and recently we began discussing possible majors. We have a lot to look forward to, basically.

I’m so glad your parents are coming around! Tufts just received a huge donation ($172millions) which will make an already excellent university even better. By the way, I know many people who think Davis Square is more interesting than Harvard Square.
And now that your parents have visited, they know it’s not that far from home; they can come again, and you can go home for long weekends. Excellent.

This thread is very helpful to me. I have a young friend in the exact same position with his parents. He “only” got into Williams, which I, of course, think is absolutely terrific. Unfortunately, no one in his immediate environment
has even heard of what is undoubtedly one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. I will suggest some of these strategies to him. BTW, I love Tufts and the Boston college experience in general.
