My Parents havent turn in their Tax Returns yet!!!

When I heard back from a bunch of colleges I thought it was weird that I haven't recieved the Finaid packet with it. but then I realized that my parents havent turned in their tax returns!

My questions are:

If they turn it this week, is it possible that I can get the package by May 1??

And also will I get less money because I didn't turn it in on time?

The colleges I got accepted to but no finaid:
Duke
UC Berkeley
UVirgina

People with prior or current experience with financial aid please help!! I doubt I'll be able to decide let alone afford those colleges without knowing my finaid. Thank you!

Did you send your FAFSA? Even if it was an estimate one?

You will probably get a lot less aid because it is well past deadlines, but if you’re eligible for federal programs like the Pell Grant, you will still receive that.

As for when you will receive your package, I am not sure. Most will probably send it to you by then, but check with your colleges’ fin aid departments.

Yea we turned in everything but the IDOC thing with the 2008 tax returns. So even if they already got everything but my tax returns then does it still mean you will get less aid?!

And actually I’m still a little hazy as to how to turn in the Tax returns…can you please briefly explain?

You need to get this info to IDOC as soon as possible. You will NOT receive a FINAL financial aid award until you do. I don’t know these schools’ policies, but they may not even process your financial aid request without all of the materials sent in to them. There WAS a deadline, wasn’t there? Were your parents aware of it? Do they understand that these documents need to be sent before the colleges will actually award a final financial aid package?

No they knew all of that…

I love my parents wholeheartedly. but they are incompetent with deadlines, work terribly together, and my dad is usually super busy and procrastinates plus he lives like 1000 miles away from my mom and I- though they are still married.

I reminded them like a million times…but to no avail. Until now when I realized I didn’t get any financial aid packs, ■■■.

So do I just send the IDOC thing to collegeboard and they will get it to the colleges? Or should I send it direct to the colleges???

Call the colleges and ask. My guess is that if they use IDOC and requested that the documents be sent THERE that is what you should be doing.

Follow the instructions. If the IDOC materials are due to IDOC, that is where to send them (Illinois, I think).

You could email the finan. aid of the places that have accepted you, and ask if you should ALSO fax the stuff to them directly, but bear in mind that they are super-busy right now (still getting those packages out, and responding to all the people pleading about missed deadlines, more aid, etc.) so follow the procedure, show that you understand rules and procedures.

Point out to parents (and all the rest of you reading this) that these kind of missed deadlines and mistakes could be costing you and your family thousands of dollars in grants or aid you do not receive, or loans you have to take out instead to make up money you did not get. It’s a pretty high price for even 2–6 hours of work (or however long it takes to get those taxes done). 4 hours vs. $4,000 less aid–that cost your household $1,000 per hour, and not a lot of people are paid at that level to make up that kind of money in 4 hours. Teach yourself to think strategically when it comes to money and delays and procrastination like this. Trying to be helpful, not judgmental.

My advice to anyone who missed the deadline this year…do NOT miss it next year.

Thanks guys…like I don’t feel bad enough:( No but seriously thanks for the advice and input. I think my parents make around 120K so I’m not sure how much I would get anyway.

Anyone know what kind of Financial aid I should expect with that and assuming we don’t have much assets except the usual cars and house?

It really depends on your EFC, but I would suspect not much with an income that high.
