My parents make too much money

So KAJ, public school kids don’t need chairs or desks either? they can learn standing up.

Does conservative have to mean selfish? I hope not, because I try to be broad-minded, but this type of argument makes “conservative” look really, really bad. Funny thing is, most conservatives say they are Christians, and this is as far from Christianity as it gets.

By the way, our local public schools do not have swimming pools, central air, or smart boards, you will be happy to know. They don’t even meet the standard guidelines for gym class, because there is no money. College advising–maybe a counselor for every 300 kids. But who would need that, because these kids aren’t going to college because they had no preparation.

Your attitude is unconscionable.

And I am a parent who pays or my kids to go to private schools AND is happy to pay taxes to support children in public schools.

Thanks KaJ for seeing my point. We should not be responsible for other children.

Redpoint: No it doesn’t. I give a lot of money to charities. Oh and btw I see a lot of wasted money in public schools starting with the teachers who don’t teach at all. When I went to public school I had a ton of teachers who didn’t teach and I felt that they were also MILKING the system with all the perks they could abuse. Especially in NYC

Columbia, I’ll ask again, why didn’t you voluntarily give back the FA grants you received since you don’t believe in subsidized education?

@ MarkBas: You can’t compare the fire department/police department to the public school system. I think your the one making stupid statements

Well first off I didn’t receive any aid. Only a 4, 000 dollar Stanford loan that I declined. Second I’m against federal aid because its guaranteed and students are going to go over bored with it just like the housing market. Their not going to be able to pay it off and whos going to pay for it. THE TAX PAYER !!! Why because Johnny had to major in history and can’t do anything with it. They don’t even ask what your GPA is in H.S or what your major is, etc.

You said you had it at one point.

Yea they did I never used any of it. Most of it was from the University in the form of grants and not FA at all. They only gave me 4, 000 and I declined it.

"@ MarkBas: You can’t compare the fire department/police department to the public school system. I think your the one making stupid statements"

He was making a logical comparison. One might not use the fire department, but one must pay for it with taxes for the benefit of others. Same as public schools. Did you know that fire engines were originally started by insurance companies? If you paid for a policy, your house fire would get put out. If not, you were out of luck. Sounds like your brand of conservatism there, Columbia.

Ahhh no. There is a chance that my house might burn down. There is a chance that I might be mugged there for I pay for those services. We all need those two departments. I don’t need the P.S system though

Being rich is rough, innit?

How about your parents helping take care of 2 grandchildren, plus their 7 children. This is from divorced parents, so my dad takes care of his stepchildren (3) and my stepmom is injured and can’t work. My dad has also been out of work for most of the past year battling a disease, and my mom can hardly work because she spends a lot of time in rehab. All three together they make less than $70k a year. My school (top 20 private) made me take out nearly $20k in loans this year and roughly 10k+ each year I’ve been there.

And this is why the educated world generally hates conservatives.

What public school has all those things? My public school used incredibly outdated books, had buses that broke down constantly, used the same computers for nearly a decade, couldn’t afford almost any sports teams, can’t afford nice places for proms etc, certainly doesn’t have a pool.

Why, because your parents have money you deserve more than other kids? Bug off, go kick dirt in a homeless man’s face and get your rocks off.

YES!!! They earned that money why should they give it to your school if they don’t have kids that go there!!! And I’m not even going to say anything about that education system hating conservatives thing because that’s beyond offensive and stupid

You’re beyond offensive and stupid.

I didn’t say the education system. I said the educated.

My parents make much less than your parents, yet they still pay taxes. Do any conservatives have a heart, somewhere deep beneath the layers of greed and puppy-kicking maybe?

your parents earned that money, yet you’re trying to ignore your dads pleas for you to go to a different school all because you feel entitled to go to your school?

I’m having to transfer to a state school from a top 20 private institution.

I’m not whining about it all over CC.

OMG !!! I’m not even going to go into that other then instead of taking out loans I’m choosing to attend a state school. I DIDN"T IGNORE HIS PLEA SO GET YOUR STORY STRAIGHT !!! And you making all these offensive claims about conservatives, yea I donb’t bother with bigots.

@Columbia I disagree with you for the most part, but my reasons are pretty much the same ones that have been posted so I won’t bother posting them here.

I do agree strongly with one thing you said though.

“whos going to pay for it. THE TAX PAYER !!! Why because Johnny had to major in history and can’t do anything with it.”

People should pay taxes for education because an educated workforce will be beneficial to the United States as a whole. Some majors are a lot more beneficial to society than others and any federal aid students receive should be approximately proportional to how much of a “big player” a person with that degree will be in society. I have no problem helping to subsidize the education of an engineer who will build a bridge that I will drive on. However, I do have a problem paying for a comm major to get drunk and work at Starbucks after graduation.

Columbia and OP,

I fail to see why you think you deserve need based aid when you cannot demonstrate need. Even weirder that you complain about this while claiming it’s unfair you have to give money to society. Where do you think a lot of that need based aid is coming from?

Conservatives getting offended because people point out a few of their many many flaws. How cute.

Columbia’s dad should demand his money back from whatever private school he went to, considering his/her atrocious grammar and lackluster written rhetoric and debate skills. Oh, by the way, I learned all that in a public school. I’d like to see what would happen if they no longer provided air conditioning in your school during summer heatwaves. As for swimming pools, I’ve never seen a high school with one. Smartboards are fantastic tools that any school can use to supplement lessons; they only further education. Tax breaks for the rich are selfish, greedy, and counterproductive. If I was rich, I would gladly pay more taxes, simply because being rich means you have excess disposable income, much more than what you need to survive comfortably. So why not throw a few pennies to the public schools who so desperately need it?

Ugh

Frosty: "“whos going to pay for it. THE TAX PAYER !!! Why because Johnny had to major in history and can’t do anything with it.”

The ignorance is astounding. You want to have a society where people do not examine history. Lovely. While we’re at it, let’s just have a totalitarian government like North Korea.

What articles are you reading that tell you people who major in history have no job prospects other than work in Starbucks?
