I hope your rents hit you. I hope they hit you hard for not improving that SAT score and bringing disgrace to your family. Sharespeare's gotta get paid son...

I think that you have a chance. If UVA recruits wrestlers, maybe you can get the coach to put in a good word. Also, the band may need baritone sax. How about U Maryland College Park and Penn State as slightly easier backups?

Assuming OOS are scored similarly as students from NoVA, you need higher SATs (can't comment on the ACTs) and your GPA is borderline (I am unsure if UVA re-weights for the school - many schools do not.). Unknown if your ethnic/religious background will score any points for helping add diversity to the freshman class (as in it's not the right group, not that they have anything against anyone of your background. One of my daughter's best friends is same and if $SOMEELITESCHOOL doesn't grab her in 2 years, they're idiots.)

Now if your parents are so wrapped up in you're getting into a big-name college, they need to calm down and chill out. [And I know parents of my kids' friends who fit that description.] The competition to get into the name schools is unbelievably fierce and ignores the many fine schools where you can get as good or better education as from the Ivies, UVA, etc. You have fabulous schools on your list, but be sure to visit and make sure you'd like attending some less over-competitive ones as well. You may discover you "fit" better at a different school. The "name" schools do help your landing the 1st job after college, but not necessarily as much as you'd think. It's more to get you in the door for an interview. After that, it's up to you and what you put into college and what you got out of the experience, not the name of the school on your diploma.

10 years from now, no one is really going to care so much where you went or what you majored in. They WILL care if you're the go-to-guy in whatever it is you are doing. They WILL care if you are educated, articulate, knowledgeable in your field, and show the ability to deliver and learn. They'll care if you are a good team player, coworker, neighbor, and friend (as appropriate). You'll be well on your way as a successful and productive adult. Someone your parents will be proud to call "our son."

thanks rhyn0, i appreciate it. My Ec's do blow...all state saxaphone, being the president of two clubs, and V.P of two other clubs suck too....and being a 2 time all county wrestler are just miserable things to put on an application. Does anybody else have any responses for THE OTHER schools on my list?

Dude, sorry I can't really help much but I'm from Jersey (not too far from Long Island), play bari sax, wrestle, and I'm muslim...thats pretty cool...

Oh yeah, you should look at Penn State as a safety...UVA oos is a really slim chance, and you might wanna narrow down your choices, 16 colleges is a lot especially if you plan on going to grad school because then the prestige of your undergrad school is worthless...

You people are idiots. delight, your SAT is fine, it's just that your score is above the typical CC students' score. Don't listen to these guys. Your EC's are above average, and you've taken some of the most challenging courses possible. I think UVA is a slight reach for you, however, but it's not because your application but because you live in NY and not VA. But anyways, you have a pretty good shot at many if not all your schools. Good luck

My kid applied UVA ED a few years ago- so I used to follow the UVA threads a bit more closely. We're from LI too, and I know UVA is tough for OOS kids-
but what I did notice is that UVA is kinda quirky re: admitting OOS kids (especially NY). There were a couple of NY kids who have gotten in and what set them apart is that they had an interesting background or a unique interest. These kids had decent SAT's and grades- but definitely not the highest.
I remember one kid - "BrooklyntoCornell"- he wanted to go to Cornell. His path followed my kid as she was born in Brooklyn and is at Cornell. He was born outside the USA, so his background may have been a bit unique. And another boy (don't remember his name) but he wanted to get into the UVA School of Nursing. He did EMT work and showed a true desire for nursing/health profession. Both these kids got in with sub 1400 SAT's (out of 1600).
so being from NY- a Muslim- a wrestler and playing the sax (they started a marching band a few years ago) I think gives you a good shot at UVA.
also sometimes the UVA admission counselor comes on board "Dean J' (??)- so maybe she'll catch this thread and give you some advice.
Good luck!

I am assuming you are being a bit melodramatic when you "titled" your thread. Not such a great idea.

I don't think typing a misleading thread title is a very good idea... but hey, it worked. I did click on your thread lol.

I think you have a VERY good shot at getting in. Your 32 ACT is very high and probably will make you a competitive candidate. I also think you have a great set of ECs. Success in both sports and music is impressive. Maybe you could try founding a club at your school in an area you are interested in?

My suggestion is that you contact the head of the marching or jazz band at UVA and make him aware of your sax skills. It could help your application, especially if he wants to hear you play. A few years ago, I know of a student receiving scholarship money if he joined the then new marching band. He did, and he is now one of the section leaders. He was an all-state selection, too.
