My parents won't let me go to Penn because I applied to CAS instead of Wharton, and they don't think CAS is prestigious enough. Yay.

why don’t you complain about this after getting in?

Your parents are dead wrong. CAS alumni earn more than Wharton alumni in the long run anyway. I’ll call them and talk to them, if they speak English.

That is, if you get in ;)

u can transfer to wharton if you want after gaining admission to cas.

but wait a minute, isn’t it more important that you study what you want under the appropriate college?

You’re the one who has to spend four years there (or elsewhere), so lobby harder if you really want to go. Of course Wharton is a great name, but Penn is Penn.

Who said you got in?

wait, aren’t decisions in a month?

Yes. OP is clearly overly confident.

he really isn’t being over confident. he is just saying that he is not allowed to attend. So even if he does get in he will be unable. IF he gets denied he is still unable. You guys are pretty much putting words in the poor guys mouth.

overly confident? i would call him an arrogant ba_stard…oh wait…

okay, i change my statement:
My parents won’t let me go to Penn IF I GET IN because I applied to CAS instead of Wharton, and they don’t think CAS is prestigious enough. Yay.

however, the main point was that my parents think kids with 1000 SAT scores and 2.8GPA’s go to Penn, and that only Wharton contains good students. (even tho wharton is part of penn…).

“but wait a minute, isn’t it more important that you study what you want under the appropriate college?”

yeah…xcept they are kinda paying for my education. :(

and i’m posting this now so I can come up with a good argument for them letting me go to CAS if i get in (pshh,c’mon ya’ll, we’re all gonna get in–i mean, all u need is a 1000SAT and 2.8GPA, right? ;))

Edit: LOL pahka, i love u.(no homo if u are a guy)

you come up with your own arguements CC is not your slave

I realize he applied regular but before you guys started jumping all over him he never said it wasn’t ED.

yea i dont think the OP was being over confident. But, if ur parents are really that stuck on prestige, if when you get all ur results in april and the most “pretigious school” that you got accepted to is penn, wouldn’t they have to let you go to penn anyways? but i guess if you got into harvard or something and insisted on going to penn CAS, that would be a whole different issue (with your parents i mean)

haha, they think Northwestern, UChicago, (insert any other school on my list) is more prestigious… (and I’ve already gotten into a school they regard as more prestigious)
smacks forehead

and its cool about the overconfidence thing–i see where ppl are coming from. i wasn’t trying to be arrogant. however, i do believe its better to be confident than pessimistic.

also, don’t get me wrong, i think i’d be happy going anywhere. but it’d be damn awesome to go to Penn.

You could show them a US News ranking. They can see the average SAT score from Penn students. You could also go to the career services website and show them where all the students from CAS go on to get jobs. Furthermore, you could use US News and NRC rankings for different departments to show your parents that Penn has many top 10 programs.

eh…a CAS degree is worth alot more right now than a Wharton degree in this economic downturn…just tell them that u don’t want to be jobless after 4yrs of college…

But it’s not like he’d graduating during the recession.

dunbar. how do you know the recession will be over in 4 years

He doesn’t. Nobody does. But even if the recession is over and the economy is growing (or booming, even) the Wharton-Wall Street complex will be a shadow of its former self, and unless you want to get business skills to be an entrepreneur right away (as were some of the most interesting undergrads I met at Wharton), it will not be the same sort of system that existed over the last 20-30 years of freewheeling high finance.

As for the OP, yeah show them simple numbers and facts that indicate the CAS and its student body are indeed worthy of adulation!

If that doesn’t work, just tell them you promise you’ll try to transfer into Wharton and then just never get around to doing it ;)

don’t show them a US news ranking.
don’t show them average SAT scores.
don’t show them job placement numbers.
don’t rely on it’s Ivy League status.

just show them that you love Penn and show them the reasons why it is a good fit for you. it’s going to be your home for 4 years - they need to realize that it’s very important for any kid to be happy where you choose to call home. hopefully, you have better reasons for wanting Penn beyond stastistical numbers and an ivy league membership. any parent can read about those things in a book… they can’t find in a book your passion and emotion.

you know what’s best for yourself better than anyone else. as the song goes: “parents just don’t understand” :)
