my princeton interview experience

my princeton interview is " special". my interviewer is much more nervous than i did, he didn't ask me a question! instead, i became the interviewer and kept asking him questions: his princeton experience, his hobby, where did he grow up. I have a telephone interview, the connection is so bad and the dog in my interviewer's house barking all the time, he kept saying sorry for his dog.
in the middle of my interview, my interviewer hung up the phone and called me half an hour later because there's an emergency in his family. this is the most terrible interview i ever had!

You're an international, right?
Your English isn't very good :)

I've heard that Princeton interviews don't carry too much weight.
If you're unfamiliar with the idiom, I mean they are not VERY important.
They are an opportunity to learn more about Princeton,
and to let Princeton learn more about you.
More the first than the second, really.

Oh is that so? My interview went on fabulously, as my interviewer was pursuing the same line of career that I want to take up... And we had lots to talk about... It was a great experience

@shruthibaskaran

Same here.
I hope it DOES count for SOMETHING, because it would certainly help me a lot.

oh, you guys made me feel much worse. I think my chance to get into Princeton is ZERO.

Don't worry, Cat2. I'm sure it will all work out. If the only reason Princeton wouldn't take you was because of the bad interview, well then maybe they don't deserve you! I'm sure you've applied to lots of excellent colleges and will be happy where ever you go. As my favorite teacher says, "happy people are happy anywhere." Everything will be okay, even if you don't go to Princeton!!

@kwu

Umm I'm sorry but that was extremely rude. After living in a foreign situation I understand how it feels when people insult your language skills, and I take personal offense. You should try being more welcoming to someone who is brave enough to communicate in an unfamiliar language. I hope for your sake you were trying to be sarcastic, but if you were, you did a poor job of it.

Cat2: I wouldn't stress out so much. As long as the bad interview wasn't YOUR fault, there's nothing to worry about. Good luck :)

You're funny. And petty.
Frankly, I don't see how telling someone their English is not very good is insulting.
You hope for my sake? What?
What are you going to do, unleash digital hell on me?

Bring it on, bubba
9(-_-)9

kwu, maybe what you said is right: my English isn't very good. but if you live in a foreign country where people don't speak English, you will know how difficult for us to learn English. You are a native speaker, so you will never understand my feelings when someone outrightly said this to you

Insulting? Maybe, maybe not. Unnecessary? Most definitely.

to change the topic (or more accurately, to change it back), i don't think that princeton will fault you for the circumstances of the interview. first, i have read that it gives the interview less weight than other places. secondly, if the guy was apologetic, he may be more sympathetic in the report he sends.

Oh crap! I am really sorry.. I didnt mean to offend you at all man.... I just wanted to know if they really dont attach so much importance to the interview!

~Sorrrry~ ...

@acadec: I agree... If he felt that it was his fault that the interview went the way it did, I am sure that he wouldnt take it out on your report :)

@cat2

English is taught as a second language in most developed nations.
You should have nearly a decade's worth of experience learning English.

English is actually not my native language.
I've had people tell me that I do not speak my native language well.
I admit it, I laugh it off, and I don't let it bother me.

You need to be less sensitive as to how people think of you.

And, if you read my first post correctly, then you should not feel worse,
since I said, and it's widely known, that the interview will not destroy your chances.

@kwu:

I hoped for your sake that you didn't actually want to say something so misguided, because frankly, I don't think such an attitude is going to be an asset to any student body.

@cat2:

Don't worry about it. Like everyone else said, he apologized to you about it, so he will probably only write good things about you in his report. In fact, he may put something nice about how you were willing to put up with his poor interview.

I hope for your sake that you don't actually judge a person's character based on a single offhanded remark, because frankly, I don't think such an attitude is going to be an asset to any student body.

There's no reason to continue hijacking the OP's post at this point.

If you are really intent on finishing this conversation, take it to PMs.

The OP's concerns have been addressed and settled.
There is no need to continue conversation of any sort.

Whine less.

I agree with posts # 4 & 13 by kwu. My reading of those posts is that kwu was trying to be honest and helpful to the OP.

thank you for all those honest and comforting words. i feel much better now. maybe you guys can give me more advice on improving my English language skills. PS: English is not my native or second language.

Excellent Interview. Lasted Two Hours. Talked About Community Service, Career Interest, Sports, Corporate Fundraising and Business Support of Charitable Organizations, Academics, and etc. Still waiting on Princeton RD but leaning more toward Yale after they contacted me and encouraged me to visit campus. Good luck to everyone in their college search and the best of luck to all seniors. It's your last year. Make it count!!!
