Sorry if the title is weird sounding. Anyway, so after my final exam, our professor put in the final grades. On the course site, my final average showed as 88.5, which meant a B. But just yesterday, it came to my attention that he updated my average to a 90.5. This was because of a project that we did which we originally got an 80 on, but now he changed it to a 100. That’s what changed my 88.5 final average to a 90.5. This means that I technically got an A. I’m wondering if there’s anyone I can talk to about this to make sure he is able to change my final grade to reflect this change.
I would wait and see what shows up on your official semester grades. If it’s a B, then you can email him and ask.
Seconding @MaineLonghorn and adding that if for some reason you juuuust barely missed the cutoff (i.e. the curve changed at the last minute), telling the professor you really enjoyed the class and thanking them BEFORE you express your concern about your grade can go a long way. You could even think of it as a way to establish a dialogue with that professor post-class, which helps them remember you if you need a recommendation or want to work in their lab. If you start right off with the grade question it can make you seem spoiled.
Note: this is from second-hand experience; my boyfriend was shocked to see a C on his final grades but when he emailed the professor it turned out he was right below the cutoff–he was the top C-earning student… then after a couple of emails back and forth he was the bottom B-earning student (grades can be changed for several days after the “final grades due” date). Professors know grades are important but also like to be treated like humans.
^My son just got a lower grade than expected in a class, so he mailed a polite letter to the professor inquiring about it. We’ll see what happens. He goes to school overseas, and the grading is a LOT tougher (his overall GPA is an 87, which is considered excellent).
Thanks! Yeah I emailed my professor about it, and he said he submitted a grade change and that I did earn an A. I had already developed somewhat of a relationship with him, kind of.
