Hey guys. As you are well aware, there have been similar threads like this in the past. A prominent one was IceQube's. There have been others but they have either failed or gave up keeping the thread alive.

This progress thread is somewhat of a motivation to not only me but everyone else studying for the SAT and taking the test in October 2013.

What I hope to accomplish here is a community of people who are dedicated to getting their dream score on the SAT. People can come post questions or just give general support. As we all post, I hope we can see our own flaws or sometimes help others see theirs.

As for me, I will try to post everyday but sometimes it will be a couple of days without posts so stick with me. Any suggestions to make this thread better will be helpful.

I will start soon so check back later!

By the way, it took me awhile to think of the title. :D

I am with you. October is my last chance. I have a 2190 right now and I am aiming for the perfect score. I have to prepare for Critical Reading and Writing. I always see people on this website acing Writing. I have Sparknotes and Silverturtles so many times yet I have only gotten a 690. Can someone tell me how to get an 800?

MIT(lol I’m gonna shorten your name.), what kind of problems trip you up? Im no expert in writing but I get around 3 wrong per test.

Blues4, I can ask you the same question. What types of questions do you get wrong? Is it vocab?

By the way, my current score is ~2100 in one sitting with my highest score being math. My goal is 2300 but anything over 2250 will suffice. I’m going to focus on perfecting my math and CONQUERING AND DESTROYING Critical Reading as it is my worst section.

Also a side note, since curves vary so much, I calculate my scores using the worst possible curve to ensure I am ready for the hardest test. So even if I get a hard test, I will grade it using the harshest curve. This way, I always expect the worst.

Surprisingly, the main idea questions throw me off. I’m just not good at CR I guess. My writing is really good though. Do you have any tips on how to improve? I’m trying to read tough books and classics like Walden and Don Quixote, but I’m not sure how to read them. For example, what should I think about as I read the books?

Lol MIT and I are somewhat in the same boat. I plan to only take the SAT in January, and I don’t think I will have another chance because I want to apply for EA for MIT :D.

Critical reading is so annoying. I’ve been getting 800M/750-800W/low 600sCR. But then again, I have plenty of time to retake the sat and practice. I might just take it October or november. Does anyone have any tips for CR? I’ve read most of the strategies in CC.

Well first I’m trying to get vocabulary out of the way. I’m using Noiterperp’s CR guide and its helping me so far. Im getting high 600’s and want to break 700.

Blues4, try reading articles from newspapers and summarize them. Then ask a family member or a friend to read it too and ask them if you have the “gist” of the main idea. I don’t know if it will help but it seems like a good idea to me.

For vocabulary, I’m using both Direct Hit books, Sparknotes 1000, and Essential 500. Is there anything else that would help?

Is that what you did? I guess it would help to an extent if I was stuck on a word. I’ll take a look at them.

So I just finished 3 math sections from a test and -0 so 800 but there were some problems I struggled on so I will review those. Its the pressure during the test that gets to me. I scored a 740 on math on my last SAT and I missed two medium problems so I have to be very, VERY careful. Tonight will be vocabulary and I’ll start looking at greek/latin roots. Tomorrow will be CR…grrr

Try devoting whole weeks to a single subject. Switching day-to-day won’t reinforce everything as much as a marathon of one subject would. Just my thoughts :3 (that’s what I did)

If you have an iPhone, you can look up vocab words on the Google Search app. Next time you pull up the Google app, the word will be there on your search history, so you can easily tap on it and find the definition if you forgot it. That’s what I did, and I only missed 3 vocab on the SAT (I’m a rising freshman though).

I took it my first time in March and got a 2050 - 720 CR 690 W (7) 640 M
I feel like I’m pretty solid on CR, most of the ones I missed were sentence completion and I just went through essential 500 and I’ll continue with vocab and I’m hoping for a pretty high score. Writing honestly the essay is the only thing that got me. I think I got 2 mc wrong but since then I’ve gotten multiple perfects on practice tests I just need to practice the essay. Math is the one thing I just feel useless at. I’m almost done with Dr. Steve’s book so hopefully I will see an improvement on the next practice test I take but I’m just overall not confident in my math abilities, does anyone have any tips for me on math or anything else?

My goal for October is a 2250, hopefully that’s not too unrealistic. I’m just still trying to keep the dream of an Ivy League alive

I’m having trouble with the critical reading passage questions that don’t have line references. I get all the line reference questions right thanks to noitaroprep method but general tone questions get me as well as vocab. I have the ultimate sat grammar guide and I’m trying to pinpoint which grammar rules are getting me but I’ve been improving in that area. Math I’ve missed 1 to 3 questions each time and the only concept I came in not knowing about was probability like combinations and permutations but I got one of my tutors to help me out on that. Other missed questions are usually silly errors. On the essays my tutors say my ideas are great but I need to fix up my style and grammar. Overall I need to slow down on math, solidify my grammar, and get better at questions on the critical reading that don’t use line references. Anyone know good strategies for those?

I’m kind of sick of CR now. Not that I’m going to give up. Instead today I’m gonna spend a full day on CR. See how it works
Summer means lots of time to prepare, but it also means a lack of motivation. I so remember the one week before June 1st, when I had to either study or die. Such tense but fun time …
So yeah, I suggest that you try putting yourself in a harsh environment sometimes, and see what you can obtain after coming out (alive) :D. Also since I’m doing CR all days I’ll be sure to have lots of questions. So look forward to my threads ^^

Ok guys I just took the 2013-2014 Official Practice test (CR only) from College Board and I’m a bit skeptical. I got -4 which puts me at around a 730. I found the test to be really easy and therefore I don’t want to trust it. If you guys have a chance to do the CR section of that test, let me know because I want to see if anyone else found it extremely easy.

On another note, the questions I got wrong were all vocabulary related. I got 1 sentence completion wrong, 2 vocab-in-context, and another “vocab” related question that I didn’t know what the word meant. I really need help on the vocab-in-context questions…

Caeruleum, I’m at a point where I know most of the material on the test and just need practice not making stupid mistakes and not getting tense during the test. I’ve devoted weeks before for each subject and I’m just trying to perfect each section.
