Yeah, Jeffery, you got it! Mind explaining? Doesn’t continue imply a plural subject?

The sentence is in a subjunctive mood (take note of the beginning of the sentence, it is imperative that).

Subjunctive for the present tense third person singular drops -s or -es. For the verb to be, the subjunctive for the present tense is be and were in the past tense.

^Yeah I know I saw it before somewhere … but I couldn’t get it right even though I know I saw the problem before :.

Jeffery: how can we recognize the subjunctive mood?

1) “If … were …”
2) “It is _____ that …”

Thanks for the responses on my math question; I will probably post a few more as the days go on but Ice–I lost you after you did 9xy = 4… I understand how to do it using the 4 triangles as well but I am interested as to how you solved it.

2xy = area of ABCD.

9xy = 4. Now, divide each side by 4.5. 9xy/4.5 = 2xy, which is what you are looking for.

4/4.5 = 9/8 (just multiply the numerator and denominator by 2).

The subjunctive is very difficult to discern in many cases. However, this sentence makes it extra obvious with the classic subjunctive sentence beginner.

Here are some of the key phrases you can look out for(although it is unlikely that CB will test the subjunctive):

It is imperative that
It is urgent that
It is vital that
It is crucial that
It is recommended that

I don’t think I’ll be able to recognize a subjunctive unless it is really obvious… :)

It’s interesting that CB explained the error as “parallelism”. If your ears are well trained, you might have noticed that the verb “censor” is in subjunctive form. Since censor is not underlined, you are forced to change “continues” to correspond with “censor”.

Side note: IceQube! You wrote 9/8 instead of 8/9…

Thanks I just had of those ah hah moments lol. Yeah, for some reason answer choice E escaped me when I posted the problem the same way 4 x 2 = 8 and 4.5 x 2 = 9 escaped you! Just joking around :)

Also Jeffery thanks for that info regarding the subjunctive.

Nevermind.

Oops :o. Rick Perry moment - sorry guys.

Mmmmm subjunctive seems like a far out concept. Though this sentence seems to summarize it quite well for me: If I were…

The singular subject takes a plural verb when the situation is…hypothetical?

I’m going to work on a 25 minute CR section … right through New Years :D.

Not quite. I think the hypothetical thing applies to “if I were”, “Had I known”, or “Were she to bring” structure.

According to Englishpage.com(which I absolutely love when I need to search for grammar related things…), the subjunctive is used to emphasize urgency or importance.

Haha… Tell me how that goes :D. I was thinking about not doing any SAT on New Years, but that would be a waste of time!

I know that the subjunctive is used to:

1) Indicate a hypothetical

If the Founding Fathers were still alive today.

2) Express a wish.

If you were perfect …

3) Emphasize urgency or importance?

About the CR section: I ended up not doing it :\ … lol

First, thanks for the site. I love Englishpage.com now :D.

Now, I’m going to practice with the subjunctive.

1) It is crucial that he keep doing well in school.
2) It is best that she play soccer, not lacrosse.
3) It is vital that the corporation donate to charitable organizations.

Right?

Yes… :D

I think you’re fine with subjunctives. :)

4) It is vital that we continue doing well and maintain our image.

Dear diary:

Here are the goals I still have yet to complete:

1) Memorize silverturtle’s list of past participles.
2) Memorize Gruber’s list of prefixes.
3) Memorize all my various Quizlet vocabulary flashcards.
4) Keep working on math.
5) Finish all the CR sections in the BB and nail each section by always picking the answer that is supported by the passage.
6) Get a 2400 on test day :).

Good night :).

MaggieQube

I’m looking at your flashcards, and I love the “believe” card…

I believe in you!!!

LOL Thanks.

I came home from my New Year’s party at 4:30 AM only to check up on this thread. :)

I can gladly say that I understand the subjunctive now based on those few examples.
