My rant about ranking

Doogie, it doesn't prove your point as you are in a completely different situation. i've never heard of a class of 6, let alone a class rank for a class of 6.

Anyway, your college example is horrible. Kids have many choices for college and very few for high school.

I have a sort-of point against class rank. In my class there are two kids battling for 1 (I am 3rd, behind these two). Do you want to know the reason why I am not able to compete for the first spot like them?

They both are taking freshman honors earth science this year, which they skipped as freshman, to have one more 5 point class in their weight. Freshman science...

yeah but im sure you took it as a freshman so it balances out. point invalid

You're sure?

A very, very, very, insanely small private school with about 200 kids total from pre-k to 11th (there's no twelfth, so everyone crams in an extra english credit to meet the requirements to graduate... i think they're adding 12th (something like you get to choose whether or not you do four-year), but luckily, i'm getting out just in time) Our senior class was originally 4, but then my cousin decided to do the three-year program, and a former student came back... so... class of 6. Which pulled me out of last in rank. So, as you can see, rank REALLY sucks. We've got honors classes, but not many. We had two in tenth grade, but that was all.

shaina even if you didnt, you could have and you can. its a valid class...they missed earth science and want to learn it. in my school you need that for graduation. maybe they were forced to take it by a counselor. its a stupid point and doogie is arguing for a lost cause. rank rocks and should remain.

trader, I was not arguing agaisnt rank. I just find the whole race to number one very tiring, backhanded, and pointless.

Rank is only fun when you're #1... heh, that rhymes... kinda.
Uh, yeah.

why is trader being a guidance counselor for people in different schools...

seeing as you are rather disturbed and anguished, I figured you neeeded a little guidance to direct you away from things such as suicide, etc.

Look at it this way, doogie. You are just barred from the BS/MD program from this one school, right? Not barred from medical school itself, right? So when you're finally a doctor, and you have to tell a patient they have cancer, you'll understand completely how they will feel, since you have obviously felt the depths of life not being fair.

its not that im upset because i cant apply to this school, i know if i work hard i can go to medical school. Its just the ignorance of this bothers me.

yeah your ingnorance bothers me too

Hmm..interesting thread.

Doogie, I think that it is totally unfair that you can't even apply to that medical program. I also agree that class ranking can vary from school to school and that it can't really be compared. And your spelling of "rediculous" really bothers me. I usually don't point these things out, but you keep claiming your brilliance but keep repeating this glaring spelling error.

I also agree with trader that you are VERY ignorant. Your "too bad for you if you don't have my excellent opportunities" attitude is insanely insensitive and makes you a complete hypocrite. I might as well say "sucks for you that you go to a competitive school and have a lower class rank". Different people are given different opportunities...and you have been handed a great one. You go to a good school, have a good future, etc. Why don't you be GREATFUL for this and stop complaining? If you REALLY want to go into medicine and you are very passionate about it, then you will become an excellent doctor (or whatever it is that you want to be). This really isn't the end of the world.

Those kids in the "sticks" might have a class rank that makes them eligible, but only the truly qualified ones that have stats that are similar to yours will get in. Stop thinking that this program is letting in complete idiots instead of you...they're not.

nope but they r letting people with much lower stats apply because their school isnt competitive and it isnt necessarily hard to be in the top 10%

I'm sure it's not the only medical program in the world (are you talking about MSU's program? I just skimmed over most of the posts so I'll probably say something that makes no sense - not reading things through can cause that.) sure class rank can really be annoying sometimes, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't TRY... you said you're in the second decile, right? that's still good - apply to the program anyway, who cares? Maybe if you're really strong, they won't pay attention to your class rank; or if it's a requirement, they might not accept you, but at least you tried. Try talking to them, ask if you have really high stats but a lower rank, do you have any chance? Besides, they're probably not letting people with lower stats in, it's not like, oh, hi, you're in the top ten percent, welcome to (wherever).... they go through their applications, and most likely people get rejected.

well i did call and they said i couldnt even apply. And you are right, they dont let them in just because they are in the top 10% but have the min stats for everything else required, but at least they have more of a chance then me.

but who said you couldn't apply...some secretary or was it actually someone higher up? probably a secretary! ask for someone else to speak with

its a requirement big guy, reading directions is important. Its like applying to a school without SAT scores, yea u can apply but it will be rejected because its incomplete

no it's like applying to a school with SAT scores that are a little lower than the school's average but everything else is good short stuff.
