My Reading ACT is a Failure

Hello everyone on College Confidential. I took the ACT in February 2010, but since I joined recently, I'll just ask the question now. I am horrible at Reading. I try to read the passages in the time allotted but my brain has to go off on tangents and think of how this story affects me, what does this story mean to me, or how is this similar to something I'm reading, seeing, or experiencing today... That just wastes my time.

My school continuously states that if you are a good reader, then you'll do great on the ACT Reading, but that doesn't work for me even though I LOVE reading.

I try speed reading, but the ACT Reading portion sometimes asks TRIVIAL and UNIMPORTANT questions about a passage, so that doesn't work.

On the ACT I got a 30 Composite: 34 Math, 33 English, 30 Science, and 24 Reading.

Can someone help me so that when I take it junior year, I can read those passages, answer all the questions, have time left over, and sleep for the rest of time (I'm just joking about the sleeping part)?
All answers are appreciated.

I read the passages pretty carefully first (but still quickly). Then I answer the questions by looking back at the passages. I find it helpful to cross out answers as I eliminate them.

Hello everyone on College Confidential. Thank you jn2011 for your response. I do that already, but because my brain goes off on tangents after reading something, doing that doesn’t work.

I wonder if I shouldn’t read the passages and just go to the questions. Once there I’ll just look for the answer in the passage without actually reading it. Would that work?

You don’t have to say “Hello everyone” in every post btw.

(not trying to sound mean, so if you want to do that it’s fine)
