My regents

Hi so I’m a NYC high school student. I took a few regents in my previous grades and I didn’t do my best. I slacked on my Earth Science because my school didn’t care about it but I didn’t even think it would be on my transcript; I ended up getting an 84. For my Algebra I, I received an 89 and for Geometry an 82. My other grade was Biology and I received a 90. These grades did count for my final class grade but even if I do retake the regents they will not change my grades. I don’t know if I should spend my time retaking these tests because I don’t know if colleges will care about that grade on my transcript.

You do not need to retake the regents. Your scores are fine. What will matter most for college is your overall GPA and SAT or ACT scores. Good luck!

Between you and me and the rest of the country: NY wants you to pass the Regents to get a diploma. And some SUNYs will use your Algebra I grade to determine math placement- and 89 is absolutely not going to be a problem. No one else in the world gives a hoot about your Regents grades.

It depends on what you are looking to achieve:
If you are looking to achieve an advanced regents diploma with mastery in math/science or math and Science, then you would need an 85 on 3 math regents or 3 science regents (or both).

I would not say that this statement is absolutely true as I have had students rejected from schools (including SAT Optional schools ) due to regents grades (as they are on the transcript). NYS wants you to get a regents diploma because Regents exams measure student achievement in high school-level course in addition to being a graduation requirement if you attend public school in NYS (and your school has not been approved for PBAT)
Remember your transcript grades talk about how you stack up agains everyone in your class.

Since the NYS regents are a graduation requirement for those who attend public school in NYS, I would not be so quick to poo-poo them because they can point out grade inflation if there is a big disconnect between the classroom grade and regents score (unless student has a history of standardized testing not being an accurate reflection of the student’s abilities, which will be corroborated by the GC).

NYS is currently in talks to eliminate the regents. Based on the tests you have taken I’m guessing you are a rising junior. My guess is by the time you graduate the regents will be eliminated. They will still be on your transcripts but schools aren’t especially interested in them. As someone else said SUNY schools may use them for placement but for admissions your GPA and SAT are what matters.

It is not going to happen within the next 5 years., even then the only ones that would be eliminated will be social studies (the US history regents will be changed June 2020) as they transition to the framework exam and do more writing on enduring issues.

sybbie719 do you work for state ed.? I’m curious where your information comes from. A recent article in my newspaper stated that state ed. is considering eliminating the regents program completely. The “new” requirement that everyone take them (rather than just those earning a regents diploma) is making it too hard to graduate. My guess is that they will rework them to “common core final exams” and have to make them easier.

@Empireapple
I do not work for NYSED but I do work for the NYCDOE and my job requires that I know Boutchanges in testing so I am on the NYSED list serve do I receive a lot of correspondence from them.
I remember reading that a council person from Brooklyn is looking to do away with the regents and have them replaced with PBAT (which ATS hooks that do them it is a lot of work). However NYS has not discussed the possibility of this happening
What has happened is that there is a new global regents exam. It has been a two year process where they moved from the standard, to the transitional and June they introduced the framework Changes in the exam
Is with the documents. There is no longer a theme based and document essays. New exam only covers 2750 to the present and is more stemmed in critical reading writing , and enduring issues. As I stated previously, the state is making changes on the US history exam.

Right now the only group of people who can graduate without taking the regents are students with disabilities with s current IEP (no 695s, no decertified students. They would have to have a superintendent determination. students must achieve a CDOS and they must be documented evidence presented that academic intervention derived were given and student still could not pass.

The Times Union in Albany, NY (where NYS Education Dept. is located), reports that NYS is evaluating dong away with the Regents. It will be interesting to see what will happen. A friend went on a UBuffalo tour this summer and admission stated they expect to not see the Regents scores in the future.
