I also want this post to be a discussion.
What are your SAT scores?
What colleges are you looking at?
What do you consider a good SAT score?
Do you think you can do better on the SAT?
What ways did you prepare for the test?

http://youtu.be/O7dcUDQQMQ4

Someone please tell me! I am impatient. :)

Patience is a virtue

@ooohcollege I’ll try.

Now that you have waited ill say that you will probably will not get into Cal and UC Davis but you have a strong shot at all of the rest.

@ooohcollege‌ cal? As in CS Pomona or SLO? I didn’t say UC Davis^…

Cal as in UC Berkeley. Cal is the shorthand name for UCB. And Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is called Cal Poly, not CS Poly SLO.

You need to tell us what major you are applying for in order to chance you.

I think most of those are schools are reaches for you. And the others are low matches.
You’d stand a much better chance if you take the SATs again (I’m taking them again too to improve my chances)
or maybe try ACT

@Deekku I’m going for mechanical engineering. I know that it’s one of the harder majors to get into.

Your math score needs to be much higher for engineering. Berkeley is a high reach right now. Bring your SAT score up to around 1900 and since you are in state, you will have a better chance.

Answering for my D who just graduated:

What do you consider a good SAT score?-- She was not satisfied with anything under 2000. 1/2 through the summer, she brought her SAT score up to 1890, and she still was not satisified. She pushed herself and broke 2000.

What ways did you prepare for the test?-- She bought the college board blue book and took every exam and used some SAT manuals to practice during the week.

ooh my bad i meant UC san diego

We are applying to the same schools! I got a 27 on the ACT and an 1840 on the SAT. I am taking the SAT again in October, which is what I think you should do too! Your extracurriculars look good and you have taken advanced classes which look good, while maintaining a high GPA. I think you have a good chance for UC Riverside, UC Irvine,
UC San Diego, and CS Poly San Luis Obispo, assuming that you have brought up your SAT score 100+ points. For UC Berkley you will need to bring up your SAT score significantly, since it is one of the hardest UCs to get into. I am not familiar with the acceptance rates and standards for CS Poly Pomona and CS Poly San Luis Obispo. GOOD LUCK!

These schools would love to have you and should be considered matches (almost safeties)
UC Riverside
UC Irvine
UC San Diego

Berkeley = Mid Reach

So my chances are good for UCR, UCI, and UCSD for mechanical engineering? I’m also wondering if you guys know any other schools–that are within my rang–for mechanical engineering?

ME is probably one of the more competitive engineering majors other than BME and CSE.
I would definitely retake the SAT to have a much better chance.
You need to calculate your CSU/UC GPA for better chancing, see link: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
Based just on your current STATS:
UCR/CPP: Match
UCI: High Match
UCSD/SLO/UCB: Reach
You might want to consider SDSU/SJSU and UCD.

@Gumbymom Thanks for your reply. I’m wondering what would be a bare minimum SAT score to be a solid match for UCSD? Sorry, I couldn’t find a freshman profile for engineers at UCSD…

Cal Poly SLO uses your freshman grades in their GPA calculation along with a point system for determining acceptances see link: http://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1014&context=statsp&sei-redir=1&referer=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%3Fp%3Dcal%2Bpoly%2Bslo%2Bmca%26fr%3Dipad#search=“cal%20poly%20slo%20mca”

UCSD/UCB/SLO: Low Reach

@Gumbymom Oh and thanks for considering those schools! I’ll check them out.

@TheIntegration‌: If you Google the “Common Data Set for UCSD”, you will get breakdown of the 25th and 75th percentile of accepted SAT scores for in-coming freshman but unfortunately not specific to Engineering. Just aim for the 50th-75th percentile for the best outcome.

@Gumbymom Thank you! I was looking for something like this.
