Well , i really dont know what to do! I have SAT scores as low as 1780 (CR-560 , Math-570 , Writing-650 , Essay-10/12) and SAT 2 scores as low as 540 in Physics. I have excellent EC's , really good grades in my secondary school report and i am in the top 10% of my class of 40 students(I know its not much). My essay is excellent (I hope so since its very precise and frank with the right touch of humour and reality.I also sent copies to various teachers, peers and some of my cousins in MIT and Columbia and got positive responses from all of them). And I have applied to top notch institutions like Duke , Stanford , Princeton , Harvard , Williams and Dartmouth. I posted earlier on this forum about my chances and I got a very frank answer(thankfully!) . I just want to know which other good institution can I get admitted into. I am in need for financial aid and have applied for it.

Since I am dead sure that I won't get admitted into any of the above institutions I also applied to Northeastern and am planning to apply to Oberlin and UConn. But I am really nervous that I might be rejected by them too! What are my chances at getting admitted into these institutions?
I want to apply to Ohio State/Univ of Michigan. But the problem is financial aid. If i can show that i am a need based candidate will i get financial aid in these institutions?

Please do help me! If anyone could recommend a good college where I have a good shot at getting admitted with my miserable SAT scores that would be great. Again , i repeat my school grades are really good and EC's are superb(Not trying to be vain here but its the truth.)

Thank you and sorry for the bother(again!!)

Why didn't you retake the SAT?
Apply to colleges that dont take SAT..i think middlebury is one of them
see this for list of colleges who dont give importance to SAT...

"I am in need for financial aid and have applied for it."

Oh gosh...that's harsh... ur not Canadian or Mexican? then chances are, if u absolutely need FA, it's gonna be REALLY tough...

With a 1780...well i'm not saying that scores are everything...but it ruins ur chances seriously... I'd say u try cheaper state universities and don't apply for FA, or try lower lower private schools that have been traditionally generous to int'l students. Try Liberal Arts Colleges too, most are pretty generous...

As for ur range of schools, I'd say u at least lower to around the Top 30... Not to worry though, I may be wrong, and anyway, all the top 100 schools of the US are great schools.

and yea that's what AI was gonna say... i should try not submitting ur SAT score... but really, I don't think ur SATI is THAT low... it's ur SATII mainly... that's why i didn't suggest it...

Heck! I am Indian. I was under the impression that most of our lot get aid easily..I suppose you need a 2000+ SAT score for that. My cousin brother had a SAT score of 2390 and excellent SAT 2 scores but his EC's were really poor. Also , his recs weren't that great since he hardly took part in school activities. He was academically brilliant and he applied for financial aid.He got into MIT and 80% of his financial needs were met!!!!

Now , what about the other colleges I applied to..Do I stand a chance?

Here are the other SAT 2 scores I didnt mention:-
U.S History-800/800 (As I said in an earlier post this is the only silver lining in my bleak SAT score reports!)
Math Level 2-540 (I know.I screwed it badly!)

How about this: Forget about Class of 2012. Take a year off, get a job, have fun, help in home, and study for the SAT's.
Get your score to be higher than 2100, at least, as many Indian students are quite competitive.

Though danielcarp's advice is very frank, i believe that you can get in this year if you forget about financial aid.
I know a guy (from India) who is in Ohio columbus with a 1700 something sat score. But hardly any fin aid.
If you really want to go- don't apply for finaid the first year-take a loan - work hard after you get in college- get a scholarship for the next year.
And later repay your loan.
If you do not want to do that- then i guess your best bet is to study hard for your boards, get above 90% and go to DU.
I say so because i find it wierd that even when you had a cousin brother with 2390 in MIT- how was it that you didn't realise the importance of your sat score?
"Heck! I am Indian. I was under the impression that most of our lot get aid easily.."
well its very surprising you didn't know that being Indian makes it difficult to even get into college.

Never say that to a student from India. It just doesnt apply. We can't wait. Period. We can't even imagine telling our parents that we want to take a year off.

If you can convince your parents, I'd highly recommend taking a year off. You can bump that SAT up to a 2100-2200 atleast and gain some perspective on what you want out of college rather than just applying to all the big names with a 1700.

Exactly Bumble Bee. My SAT scores are really low compared to the thousands of bright students here. I understand that. But , I cannot afford to take a year off. I need to start my undergrad studies in 2008!

Well , I just finished applying to Oberlin and Northeastern.

I am planning to apply to UMass Amherst , Brandeis and Ohio Wesleyan.
Could anyone please tell me my chances of getting above institutions?
And , I heard Ohio Wesleyan has a lot of Indian students. Their requirements match mine and they are very generous with financial aid.

Try to increase your EC's and write great essays...you can try applying to Franklin and Marshall...know a guy who went there with 75% aid and his SAT score was 1780 also

Your SAT scores are not competitive for merit aid at Ohio Wesleyan. You are below the minimum threshold for Trustee and Presidential scholarships. The fact that you are Indian, however, might work strongly towards your advantage. You obviously have a strong record otherwise. You are correct. There are many Indians, Pakistanis and international students at Ohio Wesleyan, mainly due to significant aid to international students. I think you have a very good chance of getting admitted with aid if SAT is the only thing problemmatic part of your application.

Hey aks90 don't worry so much! Well..You sat scores are low I agree. But IF your EC's and school grades are good then it isn't mission impossible either. Princeton accepts students who have SAT scores in the range 1700-1900 as well. In the end its lady luck dude! I think you have a good shot in UMass Amherst and Northeastern. Look on the brighter side as well. You say your essay is excellent and you are among the top 10% of your class. The colleges will look at all this. And your SAT essay score isn' too bad. Yes , you have a very very slim chance at getting admitted into the colleges you applied to. But still YOU do have a chance!
I must say that at Stanford you have almost no chance at all(Sorry for the harsh frankness!) but even people with 2400 get rejected there! So , I am really sorry to say that a 1780 wouldn't look too impressive! I am really tensed too since I applied to only 4 colleges which are really unpredictable.

ANyways aks90..I think you have a decent shot in Umass AMherst and Northeastern. But I don't think you might get much FA. You might probably get into OWU and Oberlin but again FA is the problem. Hope things work out fine for you!

PS:- Best of luck for your boards!! Are you in the Science stream or Commerce?

ah poor sat scores............ what a pity- you seem to have pretty good chances to get in otherwise,

personally my sat score isn't too great either- its 2180, but it reaches the middle 50% of the colleges i am applying to.
didn't you check out the middle 50% before applying?
