My SATs Are Good But Grades Aren't. Do "GPA Optional" Schools Exist?

Ever wonder whether colleges will decide your fate based solely on your test scores? “The Dean” provides an answer.

Some colleges may (assuming that grades / GPA for specified high school college prep courses are C / 2.00 or higher).

For example, https://admission.asu.edu/freshman/apply says that Arizona State will admit frosh who complete the specified high school courses and have one of the following:

  • top 25% in high school graduating class
  • 3.00 GPA in competency courses (4.00 = "A")
  • ACT: 22 (24 nonresidents)
  • SAT: 1120 (1180 nonresidents)

However, some majors may have higher requirements.

I’ve never heard of a GPA optional school, but some may weight your scores more heavily. It depends how large the disparity is. A student with a 2.9 and a 1500 may be too high risk for some schools (they want to be sure the student can manage a college workload), but someone with, say, a 3.3 (and with an upward trending track record) and a 1500 might have a shot.

But any student whose scores are significantly higher than the GPA would predict should consider being tested for a learning disability, unless he/she is just a smart flake.

Community college.

UL Lafayette has a low GPA requirement, and they give lots of scholarships. You should look into them. 1130SAT and 2.0 GPA is gurenteed

University of Mississippi admits Mississippi residents with a 2.00 HS GPA and 18 ACT or 970 SAT.

Lehigh ranks test scores more heavily than GPA last time I checked. Plenty of kids I know with Ivy level test scores and 3.6w high school GPAs.
