I will be a freshman starting at UB in January. My mom filled out my FAFSA form in October. She has put in the right code yet Buffalo continues to tell me that they have not yet received my fafsa form. I was wondering if anyone knows why the school hasn't received my fafsa? My bill is due in less than a month so Im getting a little nervous.

Are you saying that you don’t even know how much aid you’ll be getting and school starts in January?

Do you know what your EFC is? Do you know if UB meets need? If UB doesn’t meet need, how were you going to pay the difference?

I’m also concerned about the title of your thread. FAFSA doesn’t pay out aid. Your thread suggests that you think FAFSA will be sending your school money.

Did you get an email confirming that your FAFSA was processed? If so go into your 2009-2010 SAR here

[FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/studentaccess.jsp)

and double check that the correct school code was entered (check with the school what the code is) and that all your data is correct so that it matches what the school has.

If it all seems correct and the school still says they do not have it then print out a copy of your SAR and take it by the FA office and see if they can explain what the problem is. Sometimes a face to face sit down may be needed to sort the situation out.

Good luck.

Did you file online or mail in the FAFSA? Do you have a copy of what you sent? Check to make sure that the name portion was filled out correctly. It could be possible that she wrote down her own name/SSN without thinking or maybe switched your first and last names on the form.

I’m also concerned that the Sarah is expecting FAFSA to pay for her education costs. FAFSA doesn’t pay for anything.

Sarah, do you know what your family’s EFC is and if you’ll qualify for Fed grants and any state grants?

Will you be commuting to the school or living at the campus?

There are several different possibilities why they didn’t get your FAFSA. The first to check is the one swimcatsmom suggests. That is the most likely. If you look & you find that you DID send it … and that you DID send it to the RIGHT CAMPUS … report back & we’ll come up with some other ideas.

^mom, UB is a SUNY and tuition is under $3K/semester for NY residents. She probably won’t commute as it’s about 2 hrs from Syracuse to Buffalo on a good day but total direct costs shouldn’t be much over $15K per year.

OP, check your SAR and make sure you entered UB’s code - NOT Buffalo State’s! UB’s FAFSA code is 002837 and their TAP code is 1010. Alot of kids send their info to the wrong SUNY Buffalo! If the code is correct, call the SRC at 866-838-7257 and ask them to connect you with a FA officer. It may be that someone is working on your file but they should still be able to confirm that they have the info needed or advise you what to do to rectify the situation.

Finally, were you expecting to receive a Pell grant or TAP award for spring? If not, what type of aid were you expecting? Federal student loans for UB require you to go through the counseling session and e-sign the MPN. Links are on the SRC website.

^^^

LOL - i should have considered the difference in location, but what I’m wondering if Sarah thinks FA is going to pay for the COA.

I could be wrong, but it seems as if Sarah is expecting FA to pay for these costs.

Tuition (New York State residents): $4,970
Fees:… $2,044
Room and board (average):… $10,092
Total (New York State residents):… $17,106 plus books (about $1,000 per year)

There’s no misc or personal expenses included in this COA

Yes, that’s their quoted ANNUAL cost but it still varies (my D attends UB), especially room and board which appears to be quoted for a double with a hefty meal plan. Unlikely OP will get a double as a spring admit, more likely a triple or quad. Our direct costs with a double room were $16,200 this year as she did not take the most expensive meal plan and did not require health insurance. Misc/personal is probably low as there are no parking, laundry, printing, etc fees at UB - really no hidden fees at all - so going out or buying discount tickets to shows/games on campus would probably be the largest expense and there seems to be an abundance of jobs on and around the campuses for those who want to work. Idk what undergrad program would require $1K in books either…my D is in a health science major and we spent $420 on first semester books (several of which she’ll use next semester too) and expect to spend $200 next semester. As usual, the bookstore is more expensive than buying online, though they do rent some gen ed textbooks and a number of the profs write their own lab manuals and textbooks which are very inexpensive.

UB doesn’t guarantee to meet full need however they do have alot of programs for those who have need and they also give merit aid. Can’t tell from the post what Sarah’s situation is but our experience, which has been echoed by both instate and OOS folks on the UB forum, is that they are quite generous for a public school and “go the extra mile” to accomodate financial need. Not sure how the spring admission may affect aid availability but hopefully she’ll get an award soon after the FAFSA situation is resolved!

I know that fafsa doesnt send my school money I just wanted to get my award letter so I can see how much I need to borrow in a private loan

I will be living on campus. I know that fafsa doesn’t send money or pay for anything, it just determines what federal loans and grants I’m eligible for. I am just concerned that I will not have enough time to sort out my finances before my bill is due.

Did you check your FAFSA coding? Good luck!

I was expecting to see how much I would get for tap and pell as well as stafford loans

Yes I have sent the right code. The school told me that I need to contact Fafsa and see what the problem is. Sigh Im not even in college yet and it’s already stressful! Thanks everyone for the answers!

Did you check your SAR as suggested to make sure the school code is correct and that your name and SSN are all correct? That is the first thing you need to do to make sure your even going to be considered for aid.

What EFC did you get from your SAR? That might help us give you an idea of what you can expect as far as federal aid.

^^^

Good suggestion.

What did your SAR say is your EFC? Are you sure that you’ll qualify for Pell?

Those amounts will be shown on your award letter from UB. You’ll then have to call the BIRD line and accept your aid line by line. It’s very easy and the instructions will be included with your award. Then you’ll go online to apply for your Stafford loan. If you don’t need health insurance make sure you print out and submit the waiver form during the “window”. A month is plenty of time!

NYS HESC usually sends a link via email so you can check your TAP award - did you receive that? If not, log in and check your award status here:

https://web1.hesc.org/hescpub/main?target=renderer_tap_student_inq&select=1

What you’re looking for on the SAR is just your EFC, as swimcatsmom said. Here’s a link to the Pell disbursement chart that will help you estimate your award, if you’re eligible (ie. your EFC is under 4618):

http://www.ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/attachments/P0901PaymentSchedules1D.pdf

I saw on a previous post that you had planned to go to NYU - did you receive an award letter from them? That should have listed your federal and state grants. The only difference might be that UB gives additional SUSTA grants, as well as SEOG grants and Perkins loans, to those with low EFC’s. But you could plan on TAP, Pell, ACG, and total Stafford being the same ($5500). If you have outside scholarships that would put you over COA, UB will reduce loans/work study first.

Try not to stress about it - just call the FAFSA Help Desk or ask your mom if she can help with that. If she’s been handling the aid applications, it may be easier for her to talk with them.

*I saw on a previous post that you had planned to go to NYU - did you receive an award letter from them? *

Did Sarah apply to NYU? NYU is not good with aid; it can’t meet need. I don’t know what profession Sarah is working towards, but the kind of loans needed to go to NYU would be huge.

My mom is the one that filled everything out so Im not sure. But it turns out that even though we put in the right code, fafsa still sent my information to Buff State instead of UB.

I got scholarships from nyu so it really wasnt that bad. but regardless, they didnt help me to get any loans so I turned to a suny school because they helped my brother a lot with loans
