okay, so for a high schooler to take classes at my community college you need to get signatures from the principal for "approval". our actual principal was too busy cause it's kind of career week right now and we have like 38427384723842 guests. so right now, i had to get my sheet signed by my vice principal and well .. she was really discouraging about it.

i mean in the past, my grades really sucked. like i chose making friends over success and well .. spent more time on friends that i should've spent on school. but this semester, i'm doing really well ... i mean i have 4 A's and 2 B-'s! we have huge assignments due in those classes, 1 a research paper, and i usually get a's on all my papers a majority of the time, and for precalc ive just decided if i study like a maniac, and get a's on all my tests, i'd be set.

but anyways, she really was against me taking 3 classes over the summer because it's apparently supposed to be "down time". for me, when summer's "down-time", my depression really gets to me and i just become really depressed and sometimes even suicidal -- so i'd rather be super busy. hence, im taking three classes and doing two jobs.

that and i wanted to take human anatomy and developmental psych during the school year (i would be a senior then) and well, my schedule's pretty light with the exception of apes and calc ap, so i thought taking a night class twice a week would be cool. she kept emphasizing how i'd do bad though and said if my parents had a problem with it they should call her.

thing is, I'M INTERESTED IN THOSE CLASSES and it's really ****ing me off cause if i went to my public school they'd let me do whatever i want!

plus my principal just took 1 minute to sign it last year and she was just like, "promise me you'll have fun too" and was really encouraging about it ..

but the vp gave me so much discouragement and a 30 minute lecture.

So, she didn't sign? Talk to your parents and get their support and then go find the busy Principal and start over. My son could be you; I'd be delighted if this was his plan and I'd happily ask the school administration to support it. If you find three classes are too much you can always drop a class and you can re-assess come fall if need be once you know what it is to take college classes. Forget about the Vice Principal; believe in yourself and don't let anyone get you down.

she did sign it, but with much disgression.

she didn't sign the developmental psych/human anatomy during the school year though! that's what's making me angry cause i have a really light schedule next year except for apes and calc ap!

When you're at CC during the summer try to talk to the developmental psych/human anatomy instructor and explain your situation. In the fall you can get your principal's signature and then add the class.

roses&clovers: yeah i get that, but it's just that every other teacher at school is so encouraging about it and she's the only one who's like, "YOU'LL FAIL!" and it's like, i'm interested in those classes you know?? so i'll actually WANT to study for them.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! I'VE EMAILED MY PRINCIPAL.
she replied and said to come and give her the form and that she'd sign it!
im super happy right now!!

You plan on taking 9 credits and working 2 jobs over the summer? That does seem like a lot of work, but the VP shouldn't discourage you from doing what you want. I'm curious, what classes are you taking over the summer?

Are you taking the human anatomy class during the evening? Does that class also have a lab that you have to take? Labs late in the evening kinda suck.

Actually, I understand why the VP didn't want to sign that paper... even if you were a 4.0 student, the feat you are trying will be challenging. Anyways, good luck, and congrats for having your schedule approved

Congratulations! My D just went through the same thing, altho she's a sophomore. She FINALLY got the Community College forms signed, but the high school kept trying to talk her out of it. She's going to audit an intermediate Algebra and take one or two intro college classes. She was told by the high school that she should be having fun and working at this point, and that she had plenty of time to do AP classes later. D thinks she's actually have fun with the intro classes, as opposed to hanging out at the mall or watching anime on tv. Her minimum wage job isn't going to challenge her! It's really irritating that you have to fight for the right to spend your own time and money the way you want.

Our HS offers an anatomy class, based on a college class with med-school 3-D software. It's limited to Seniors, and is so popular that 2/3 of the Seniors take it. The top 10 students get to see open heart surgery, and the competition is very fierce. They do things for extra credit like asking students to identify different bones by feel. Based on the amount of work and memorizing that my other kids did when they took that class, though, I'd say it would be a tough one to take at Community College in addition to a full class-load during a school year. Not impossible, just tough.

yeah, i get why too. it's just what made me angry was how discouraging she was about it and how sure she was that i would fail. it's just im really into these classes and i'd actually feel like studying.

and neonzeus, yeah my friend's mom suggested me taking human anatomy over the summer instead of during the school year and taking one of the courses i planned to take during the summer during the school year. i'm taking it into consideration. wow, your daughter's school seems to be really good. mine doesn't even have AP Physics! we do have physics honors though, but hardly anyone gets to take it ... there's only one class period of it. and considering my parents pay 11k for my school .. i really think they should let us take whatever we feel and offer a wider course selection.

anddd im one of the few that isnt on financial aid/work grant!!
i mean, i would've totally gone to my public school, i've gone to public schools until high school -- and the only reason i went to a private was because they just recently built the public school i'm supposed to go to. it was originally very good until it became overcrowded, thus my parents decided it would be better for me going to a private school. but i could've been taking way more college courses consecutively and they have this awesome biotech program that we could do starting junior year at our community college.

"I'm worried my guidance counsellor will discourage me from applying to top universities next yr."

okay, so my friend switched from a super fancy private school to a public this year and she said that one of her friends [at the fancy private school] was told she wouldn't get into berkeley by her counselor. guess what? she applied and got in.
