Ok here's my dilemma. My 9th grade school year was bad, straight C's a B and a D bad. In 10th grade, I'll have another year of standard classes, none rigorous(no AP's or Honors). I want to take some AP's but they won't let me. I was think about self studying a few( about 3-5) on top of the classes I'm taking in school. The thing is, when I went to my GC to talk about this, she was like, "what the hell is self studying?" My school is full of slackers who end up at community college and then go work at Burger King(im not saying this is what CC students do, just saying what kids @ my school do). Can I take the AP exams if I self studied? Can I take it even if my GC and teacher says no? Will a different school allow me to take it there if my school keeps me out? If I cant do this, I'll cry as I'll most likely be locked out of the top schools and no iBanking for me :( . I'll buy the subject books with my own money and will study very very hard :D

you can still selfstudy. Your guidance counselor isnt a very good one if she doesnt know what selfstudying is.

The most important thing is to make good grades. Go for straight A’s this year, its far more important than the selfstudying aps. Selfstudy them too if you can, though.

The good news for you is that many colleges are willing to overlook a bad freshman year.

I was in a similar position that you are in my ninth grade year. I wasn’t allowed to take Pre-AP classes that I needed in order to take AP classes in tenth grade. I ended up self studying for the AP exams during the summer of 8th grade and talked to the teachers who taught the Pre-AP classes I needed. All but one agreed to talk to the guidance counselor about getting me in their class, once they saw that I was a hard worker and that I was smarter than my grades let on. If your school year doesn’t start very soon, you could try that method - self study them and talk to the teachers who teach them.

If you do end up self-studying, just sign up for the AP class. Explain to your GC what it is and see what he/she says. If they say no, call College Board. They will help you find an alternative location. They don’t want to lose any money. Let me know if you have any more questions in a PM.

I know about the grades, I know what I need to do. But on top of that, I really want challenge myself and show I can do the work. I love learning and want to do AP Euro History, AP Biology, AP Psych, AP Comp Science, and MAYBE AP art history(but will be the 1st one I drop if it’s all too much).

Here are the answers to your questions:
- If you can self-study AP’s? yes (College Board said so)
- If your GC says no? still yes (It’s your future)
- If you can take the test at another school? yes (This is a little harder. You need to find a nearby school that offer the test, explain the situation, and orgainize accommodations before the registration deadline [November])

-Good luck :D

Thanks! .

minor correction: the registration deadline is in March, not November
