My school stopped ranking students. Will this help/hurt applications?

My high school no longer does class ranks (and consequently, valedictorian status). I don't see how this would hurt college applicants, unless colleges really prefer to see class ranks. What do you think?

It’s not a huge deal, just one less thing they have to judge you on.

If you would otherwise be valedictorian or salutatorian, it probably hurts.

Um…i don’t think it would since many schools don’t rank students either. Mine stopped ranking cuz apparently everyone was getting too competitive.

^ speaking of students getting competitive, a friend of mine goes to a school where they’re ranked and the ranks are put up to everyone… during study hall, they have to sit in rank order. that’s why all the girls are always stressed and crying etc.

That’s horrible! :(

It is, but this isn’t in the US it’s in Korea

Where nearly every school is ranked and the top 20 of the 500-ish in each grade are given special attention. That’s what my cousin’s school is like. I’m like, are you kidding… that’s depressing

My school doesn’t rank, but we do have Vali and Salu.

So it’s kinda like Vali<----Salu<—everyone else xD

My school ranks. And they enjoy that our class was extremely competitive–Top 10 GPAs ranging from 4.58 to 4.83 (Yeah, my school’s valedictorian was a bit crazy).
For me, I feel that ranks got me to be competitive. Because once everyone started taking all the AP classes for rank, I did too because I felt like I wanted to push myself–“If this person did this, I can achieve it too”. It made me not be lazy in high school.
But sometimes rank causes too much competition and looking down on others.

Anyway, for the OP, it just makes one less thing to judge your app on, but it’s not a terrible thing; many schools don’t have rank.

My public high school is extremely competitive. After hearing about some of the students’ schedules for next year, they are going overboard. Apparently my 4.20 GPA isn’t enough to make the top quarter of my school, so I’m hoping the schools won’t be judgmental about my rank because it only means my graduating class is very competitive.

I also go to a public high school that is highly competitive and stopped ranking people during my freshman year. We still have valedictorians and salutitorians, but they must meet preset GPA requirements.

It didn’t affect anyone negatively. We still had many acceptances to Ivies and other highly competitive schools.

I personally think that class rank is a vile, evil thing and one of the few intelligent things that my school’s otherwise incompetent administration has ever done was doing away with it.

They will probably assume your school is just another case of serious grade inflation.
Plus don’t they judge you based on the other kids in your school?

My school has class ranks and every single year there is a law suit filed by the sal. though nothing ever gets reversed. I felt more motivated to work hard after receiving my class rank as it gave me a better idea of where my grades may get me.

My school doesnt rank for college apps and stuff, but it’s not impossible to find out your rank. They do post up a Top 10 list for each grade and pick the val and sal for the graduating seniors.

Yes, they do. Other students manage to get A’s on harder classes, though some do try inflate their GPA’s by taking AP courses just for the sake of a grade boost. This is why AP World, Psych, Stats, and US History have large class sizes at my school.
