My School's Class Registration System Stinks

Every time I get a perfectly planned out schedule I find out that it doesn't work because of conflicting final exam times or the class spontaneously filled up before I could sign up for it or maybe I get waitlisted for a 600 person class. I've been spending two weeks trying to get this figured out goddam... I think my college doesn't care enough to give us a convenient way to register for classes or else I wouldn't have this much trouble.

How do you register for your classes at your college? Do you find that it's just as difficult to get the classes that you want? Maybe it's worse for public universities due to a larger student body...?

I will be attending a mid-sized (~9k) private college in the fall. Upperclassmen, I think, just register online, and I guess they just have to try and do it before the classes they want fill up.

For freshmen, though, you register for classes at orientation, which is nice if you attend an earlier one (there are 7 throughout the summer), but since I live half-way across the country, I have to go to the last one (right before school starts). Which means that by the time I would get to register, all the classes would probably be full.

Luckily, I got into a good program in the school, and one of the advisors for it offered to register anyone in the program for classes early. I still missed out on one class I wanted (not really the class, but the section), but other than that I’m all set for next year!

Will you be a freshman next year? I hear that’s the hardest year to get the classes you want, even though most are probably huge intro classes…

The system at my school is pretty easy to figure out after you do it, but it’s definitely frustrating. As a transfer student, I had to meet with an advisor and then I was able to register using their online system. It’s just frustrating because you MUST be registered for at least 12 credits at all times, which is fine until you’re trying to move classes around to fit something else in. You can’t add one class because it’s at the same time as another, but you can’t drop THAT class because you’ll be below 12 credits… it’s just harder than it needs to be. You have to find some random class that meets on a Saturday or late at night to make sure it doesn’t conflict with one of your other classes just to stay at 12 credits so you can move things around and then drop it. whew. That’s really my only complaint. It’s extremely easy to find classes and what-not.

yeah. its tough to schedule things. especially being a freshman, I have no idea what extracurricular I want to do, and what if one meets and I have class? Its so conflicting. I guess I’ll have to learn. I mean, I tried to balance mine out, where I have free time basically all week from 10-11 AM for brunch or whatever, but its tough because you have little idea on what you might do later- being a freshman

My class registration is pretty easy and all online! We go by credit brackets within class year. So honors and graduating seniors go first. Then upper credit juniors and so on. You can watch classes empty or fill as you plan your schedule and wait for your 8am slot to open. Registration for Spring for example started in like Oct for the seniors while freshman registered in like late November. You can drop below 12 credits but you can’t go over the max.

Registration is now closed while all the freshman register online at orientation. Problem is I’ve had a debilitating illness (well, syndrome) take over my life this summer. Now I have to wait till drop/add week opens up the first week of school before I can mess with my schedule to make it livable. Uugh. Real annoying.

Clubs usually meet late afternoon or evening. Friends will only be up earlier if they are gym morning birds or are meeting for lunch after being dragged up from an 8am class. Otherwise everyone seems to either be sleeping, napping, or catching up on hw in order to play later in the day.
