My (Second) College Search Begins

FYI (though you probably know this), Earth Science is essentially Geology:

@PurpleTitan Thanks for the information!

Does anyone know of any good journalism schools that fall below the 20k mark in terms of annual tuition?

Well, many journalism majors have trouble finding a job in the US these days and I only know of the top few programs (which are outside your price range), but South Dakota St. offers a Journalism major. Maybe some of the other Dakota schools as well.

@PurpleTitan, BYU offers one as well. I think they only charge about 10k annually for tuition. That sounds like a steal to me. Do you know anything about BYU in general?

BYU is very Mormon.
If you are Mormon, you will fit in.

They don’t allow drugs, alcohol, tobacco, tea, pre-marital sex, or profanity.

They also have dress and grooming standards.

BYU rules:

I think that 10k is if you’re Mormon.
Mizzou is a good journalism school. Email them to know their rules about applying as a freshman if you have fewer than 30 credits. Internationals’ deadline is Juy 1st I think (not April 1st, although the earlier you’re admitted to Mizzou, the earlier you can get into the school of journalism. You need a 29 on your ACT and/or a TOEFL 100 but you can retake it up to the June session.) Also it looks like they’ll consider you a freshman applicant if you only have fewer than 24 credits.

That’s great that you got a positive response from Oberlin. I’m curious to know what the response was from the other schools you contacted – no, or just no response?

Oberlin actually has a very good geology department. It’s a member of the Keck Consortium, which, if you don’t know about see here: http://www.keckgeology.org/

These are all good choices for geology.

Oberlin considers you a transfer if “1) They have been enrolled in a degree-seeking program, regardless of how many credits have been earned.” They accept transfers for Spring semester.

Interestingly, they note that although the deadline for Fall semester has passed (it was March 15) “Applications completed after these deadlines will be considered as space allows.” If I were you I’d pursue this further now.

I wouldn’t worry too much about finding a school with an undergraduate journalism major, as many successful journalists have liberal arts degrees.

I also wouldn’t focus on the need-blind vs need-aware aspect. “Guarantees to meet full need to international transfers” is what you need. I would only apply to the schools you list if they confirm that they meet that requirement, even if they claim they are need blind.

@momrath 12 colleges will provide aid, ranging from full need to hefty scholarships. A further 9 will also do the same, but noted that their aid is “limited and competitive.” All in all, I am very happy with the response I got. I can definitely craft a good list from these colleges.

Can you open a thread in the international students’ forum listing these colleges under the title “in the US, need to transfer? some colleges with scholarships”. It’ll be immensely useful to many students and may even end up a pinned thread.
You might want to wait till you’ve applied to protect your chances, but please DO post this information at some point.
The only ones I know for sure are UMN-TC, UMN-Morris, Gettysburg (1), and Dickinson (1).

21 schools that might come up with aid. That’s terrific. I would also would also like to have that list.
