My Situation (and how I should handle it)

Yes, I meant Lawrenceville as a "backup" for day opportunity. Thanks for the clarification, jennycraig.

Westpath, that is very interesting. Can you give any other examples (besides Deerfield and Middlesex) that might have good opportunities for older admissions or repeats?

Unfortunately, commute is not something that would be possible. It would be way too much toll on my mother for the daily rides back and forth, and then again. Just not worth it. I'm a boy.

Some schools that I think I might apply to as a rising junior:

Choate, Hotchkiss, Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, Groton, Lawrenceville, and Middlesex.

Groton will probably be the hardest since it is a small school and it starts in the eighth grade. I'd call all the schools I were interested and ask how many eleventh graders usually apply and how many they take if I were you.

Good luck

Groton told us they prefer not to take 11th graders, of course that may be negotiable. Don't know about Exeter or L'ville. Andover and Choate said 16 for 10th grade would put you in the middle of the class agewise. I know two boys repeated 10th for Hotchkiss. Message we got was it is very hard to enter a new school as a jr. and begin the college process immediately - no time to assimilate before you are already planning to leave. That said, all the schools mentioned had incoming 11th graders. I agree with Jonathan1 -call and ask. FYI -we noticed the SSAT scores average went up in 10th grade, ie. your score % is based on an average of the kids taking the test in your grade, for 10th grade the "pool" had higher raw scores than the 9th pool, maybe more serious students looking to transfer in as Jr.'s?? Hope this helps.

Interesting westpath, we specifically asked one school (that I think you applied to as well) about the whole repeating thing - how do you decide, do you ever suggest it, etc. My son is a current 9th grader and will not repeat. They told us that they rarely START those conversations. Not to say if you ask they won't tell you, but this school didn't seem to me like they told you what grade to apply to.

Another thought RedPanda, is that your list is all schools with pretty low admissions rates - around 20% (+ - ). You should probably expand that somewhat.

my oldest D went to lawrenceville for 11th grade- i know they take a small number. that said, it is a tough grade for entering - you are beginning the college process that january. she lovedit, though...

maybe you should think about princeton day school
