My sons chances

This is a school he is considering. SAT is 680 reading, 620 math. ACT composite is 29. He is ranked 7 out of 160 at a very competitive magnet school. GPA is 3.7 unweighted and 4.5 weighted. Many AP classes. Extracurricular include baseball team, VP SGA , captain of academic team, volunteer at his church. Will need merit scholarship. Thanks for your advice!

Your sons stats are low for Washington & Lee, but I do know someone with the same ACT and similar gpa who was accepted with no hooks., so never say never. Stats are likely to low for merit though

Your son’s stats may be on the low side for merit. However, I would still apply by December 1st and submit the Johnson Application. Even if your son is not a candidate for merit, applying early (but not ED since you need financial help) shows interest. You will also want to visit campus and interview or seek out an alumni interview if one is available in your area. Thankfully, WLU has a very large endowment and is fairly generous with financial aid for admitted students.

There’s no minimum score for a Johnson, and the process is holistic, so I agree with @NCSwimmom that it’s worth a shot. With a strong essay & recs and his good EC’s, he might be considered, although I’m afraid it’s a very long shot. Have you considered schools with a similar feeling to W&L: Sewanee, Centre, Rhodes, Wofford, Elon? All have merit scholarships, and while his scores are still probably on the low side for merit at those schools, they are not as far out of the ballpark as they put him at W&L. Wake Forest is test optional but does not offer as much merit.

He is waiting to hear from Duquesne. That’s his first choice.my wife and I are alumni so we hope they offer him a good scholarship. He was offered full tuition to Wingate. That’s going to be his fall back school. He is applying to Wofford because we heard their merit scholarships are generous. Also, UNC is in the running but probably no merit there. His high school nominated him for morehead Cain scholarship but it’s a longshot.

How wonderful that he already has such a good offer in hand, @ironcity50! And if his school has nominated him for the Morehead Cain, he must be a terrific kid. Hope his first choice comes through with a scholarship.

Thanks, he is a good kid and he works very hard. Appreciate the kind w

College of Charleston might also be a possibility, and University of South Carolina.

We have found that W&L is very generous with grant $ - it is not “merit money” but they seem reasonable about incomes and what the cost of college is for most families.
