Hello,

My son had a GPA of 4.1, SAT score 2250-2300, and SAT II scores above 750. He really wanted to go to Stanford, but was rejected. He was very upset about it, and he is going to Duke.

He is talking about transferring to Stanford next year. He is planning to major in biology/computer science/economics.

Is this a good idea?

Just curious.... How do you know your son will not thrive at Duke? Why would you be talking about transferring from a school before he even attends?
I checked your last post. It mentioned that he visited Duke and really liked it, but you wanted him to go to Cornell. :)

I don't want him to transfer, but he suddenly raised the topic yesterday. I advised to stay the course for now.

I agree with sokkermom. Duke is a great university and will provide your son with all the opportunities for a great education and a strong network. One of my best friends earned his BS in Electrical Engineering at Duke and guess where he ended up getting his PhD from? Yup, Stanford! If your son settles in nicely at Duke and makes good friends, I strongly discourage him from transfering. Freshman year at a college is crucial to fitting in at a university if you ask me. Transfer students don't usually fit in as well as students who come in as Freshmen.

Of course, if after a year at Duke, he is still not happy and wants to transfer out, he will stand a chance, assuming he can maintain a good GPA at Duke.

I'd whack him upside the head and threaten to send him to the local state school. But that's just me.
