My sophomore grades are terrible?

Now that finals are approaching, I'm getting really worried about my current grades. With these grades, I don't know if my dream colleges would accept me. At the moment, I'm not too sure what colleges I want to go to. Possibly OSU or maybe a catholic university, such as Santa Clara or Gonzaga? I don't know. Anyways, onto my grades.

Freshman:
Global studies 9 - A
Geometry - A and then B 2nd semester
English 9 - A
Physics I - B and then took Honors and got an A
Band - A
Japanese 1 - A
PE/Health - A

So, I got a 3.8 both semesters.

Sophomore: (as of right now)
APUSH - C
AP Psych - C+
Honors Chem - D+
Advanced Algebra 2 - B
P.E. - A
English 10 - A
Japanese 2 - A

Unweighted: 2.8

I'm hoping to bring Psych and Chem to a B before finals. I have a retake for Chem tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I'll pass it and that'll get me a B again. We have proficiency grading, so yeah.

As of right now, I know my grades are terrible and do my sophomore grades matter?

Also, I'm debating whether or not I should drop APUSH and get study hall. I struggle so hard in that class. Would dropping it make my resume worse?

Thank you!

@xLoveRita I’m in the exact same position of you (as in same freshman and current sophomore GPA). Chin up, we still have half of a year to go.

And on the happy, theoretical side of things, if we were to get straight A’s for the rest of our high school career, we could probably graduate with at least a 3.7-3.8 unweighted cumulative GPA. Which, supplemented by great extracurriculars, recommendations, essays, and test scores isn’t bad.

I’m sorry I’m not too helpful for the current situation, as I said, I’m in the same boat, and am still looking for a way out of this “labyrinth of suffering”.

@facetus
No worries, haha. I don’t feel too bad knowing there’s someone in the same boat as me. Are you taking any college courses or extracurriculars?
Tbh, I don’t think getting 4.0’s is realistic, now that I’m looking at the classes I want to take. I think I should just take the normal classes, rather than suffocating under them.

Don’t be so harsh on yourself. Everyone has bumps on their high school road. It’s only natural. But looking at your courseload, it just seems like you’re overworking yourself with 2 APs on top of honors chem (IMO the hardest class in my high school career). Just relax and try to to adjust your study habits. Maybe go back to your learning methods in grade 9 since your grades were pretty good then? Best of luck!

I am a sophomore trying to get in a college too. I don’t know what my chances are, will someone please help me on this?
Elective-(Financial Literacy)-90 MP1, 74 MP2
Elective-(Engineering)-65 MP1, 50 MP2
English-(H)-86 MP1, 88 MP2
US History-(CP)-97 MP1, 93 MP2
Spanish 2-(CP)-84 MP1, 80 MP2
Geometry-(H)-92 MP1, 95 MP2
Chemistry-(H)-84 MP1, 93 MP2
Gym-80 MP1, 97 MP2
I don’t know what I can do to improve those electives. They count the same as the other classes, but I’ve done all I can to do well in them. They pull my entire GPA down. What are my chances of getting into college?

good news is that many colleges look primarily at core classes rather than electives. But it really seems like you’re struggling with fin lit and engineering. My advice is to drop engineering and pursue something else. Other than that, your core scores look peachy.

Thank you for your reply. I was really stressed out about these electives. We can’t drop electives, so I’ll have to do the best I can, but it’s really good for me that colleges look at core classes. Again, thanks.

It seems as though you are one of those kids who takes all the harder classes but can’t handle them. Some advice: a 2.8 with 2 AP’s and an honors is way worse than a 3.8 with regular classes.

@xLoveRita I go to a super competitive private school, so I’m not thinking of taking college classes yet. Bad grades are bad grades though, and we, fellow smart slackers, need to stick together. ;)

I’m involved with lacrosse, did varsity tennis for a year (in all honesty they just needed an extra player and I wanted to get out of PE, just don’t tell the colleges that), and I’m part of Conduct Review, Model UN, my school’s improv troupe, and a lot of literary magazines and stuff. It seems like a lot, but MUN meets for 30 minutes once a week, lacrosse is only in the spring, and Conduct Review meets once a month for lunch. So. Not bad. I’m going to streamline my extracurriculars very soon though… But ONLY after I get my grades in order, cause I just really need to get that in line before I try to conquer anything else.

As for the GPA, 3.8 is with straight A’s, some A’s and some B’s is like 3.7. Still not all that bad. And for course planning, take classes that you know you could at least get a B in. If any lower, go for normal.

And personal recommendation, our grade on CC is literally complaining about not getting a 90 on a quiz or like getting only a 93 on a paper, so, I would stay off of our class page until we’re back on our feet.
