My Spring 08 Schedule: Doable?

Hi all. I'm a freshman trying to get into Haas. This semester I'm taking:

Fall 07

Stat 21 [4]
Philos 12A [4]
English R1A [4]
ESPM 2 [3]

I'm doing fine; the work is more than manageable. I'm taking a somewhat similar next semester [also 15 units] but unsure if it will be as easy.

Spring 08

UGB 10 [3]
English R1B [4]
Econ 2 [4]
Math 1B [4]

I only hear negative things about all FOUR classes. UGB 10's teacher is mean, English R1B is impossible, Econ is uber-competitve, Math 1B is insane, etc. What do you think? Thanks :]

Next semester will be much more difficult, especially since you're trying to get top grades to get into Haas. If you're not great at math, you'll find Math 1B difficult, especially compared to high school AP Calculus. It's a weeder class with stiff grading.

Don't take English R1B, take a part "B" R&C class from a different department, such as German R5B. I highly recommend it over English R1B.

Thanks guys for the advice. Kenf, I consider math my strongest subject [800 SAT I, 800 Math IIC, 5 on AP Calculus AB] so I think I'll be fine. Golden Bear, why is it that English R1B is so difficult? I hear that a lot. I'm going to take something else cuz my other three classes will require a lot of studying.

English R1B is taught by grad students in the English department and Comp Lit R1B by grad students in the Comp Lit department and they are usually have higher standards then people in the German or Scandinavian departments, who aren't English or Literature specialists by default.

You'll be fine. UGBA10 and Math 1B will give you a good amount of work.

as a haas student, i feel like i can give you some good advice. first, ugba 10 is a great class, and the professor is actually pretty nice/funny. the only negative is the competitiveness of the class because most people in the class are trying to get into haas. grades are assigned based entirely on your class rank, so even if you get a 27/30 on an exam, you may receive a B because of how well others did on it. as for your other classes, i would just take math 16a/b and econ 1 instead of 1a/b and econ 2 because haas doesn't care if you take the "easier" classes. what they DO care about is your GPA. lastly, if you like your eng r1a class, go ahead and take r1b. they are very similar classes for the most part (read some books, discuss them in class, and write papers on them). hope this helps.

Goldenbear, I have heard that German and Scandinavian have easier grading scales. But I just spoke to someone in my study lounge in Comp. Lit R1B and he said the fact that it's taught by GSI's is what makes it easier; they are carefree for the most part. I guess it just depends on who you get.

rollonyoubears, I thought about taking an easier Calculus course but honestly, I love challenging myself in Math. Math 1B shouldn't be too bad. But is Econ 2 harder than Econ 1? I was under the assumption that they were about the same, only Econ 1 is 2 hours lecture 2 hours discussion and Econ 2 is 3 hours lecture 1 hour discussion.

It really does depend on the particular GSI you get for the R&C class. In my German R5B every single person got an A. That is not a lie. It's too bad for y'all that he isn't teaching that anymore.

^ I might have had the same GSI......
