My stats are EXTREMELY LOW...chance me? I'm very nervous! :(

Hey, so i go to a pretty competitive catholic school in NYC. I know CUNYs don't look at extracurriculars(sadly, because mine are pretty good), so can you basically tell me if I have a shot at them with my stats?

GPA: 78.2 or 2.3
SAT: 1610 (M 510, CR 490, W 610)

AP/IB/Honors Courses:
Freshman Year: Full Honors
Sophomore Year: Global History 10H, Chemistry 10H
Junior Year: IB English HL, IB History HL, IB Psychology HL, Physics 11H

Senior Year Schedule:
IB/AP English HL
IB/AP Psychology HL
AP European History/AP US History Combo Course
AP Spanish Language
English 12: Advanced Journalism 12H
Precalculus 12H
Photography
Religion 12
Concert Band 12
Select Band 12

I have no free/lunch periods. I am literally the only senior at my school that is doing this(out of a class of 250+) As for the first trimester, all of my grades were 85+, except for IB English(I did not complete my Internal Assessment in time for the end of the marking period, so I was docked 30 point off my grade)

I wrote a personal statement describing my reason for poor grades, which is because of the medical problems that I have(Hypersomnia, Hyperventilation, Paresthesia, and Panic Attacks). They are primarily happening due to the fact that I am very overweight and unhealthy. These disorders have caused me to be absent for many days of school.
Freshman Year:23 days
Sophomore Year: 42 days
Junior Year: 68 days

I am applying to(in order of choice based on CUNY app):
Hunter College(I REALLY want to go here)
Branch College
Brooklyn College
City College
College of Staten Island

I’m applying to CUNYs, as well, so we’re in the same boat.

How are your Regents scores?

For GPA, since CUNYs are getting competitive now, I would suggest bringing them up to the mid 80s.

Your SATs CR + M (which is what CUNY looks at) is 1000, but that can go either way.

I recommend that you read this link for added information:

CUNY requires an admission test if you don’t meet the requirements.

[Admissions Requirements - Testing - CUNY](http://www.cuny.edu/academics/testing/cuny-assessment-tests/admissions-requirements.html)

Based on your CR and Math, you reach the requirements, but for added safety, just double check on your regents scores that I asked about above.

Good Luck, and I hope your health gets better in the future. =)

eh…youll get into one of them…CUNYs may be competitive now, but i doubt they’re hard to get into

Thanks for the chance guys!

And yeah, my regents scores are all pretty good:
Bio- 81
Chem- 75
Physics- 42(came in an hour late to the exam and they did not offer the regent in the summer)
English-81(retaking in January)
World History-93
US History-87
Spanish-83(retaking in January)
Math A-89
Math B-68(retaking in january but trig/alg2 exam instead)

CUNYS have become competitive now but I still think you stand a chance. Not too sure about Baruch, however.

Anyway, I like the idea of your personal statement. However, make sure you don’t make it sound like you are trying to get pity/sympathy from the school.

Ex: I have such and such so you should accept me because of this.

They don’t like that!

Best of luck to you!

thanks man. And yeah, i know that already lol. I’m actually using a completely different topic for my application essay to the rest of the colleges that I am applying to, including my medical problems in the additional information section.

The CUNYs are the only colleges that will only receive the personal statement about my medical problem. I’m sure they won’t care about the creativity that I put into my other topic.

CUNYs have become a little bit more competitive, but I think that they may look at how many AP courses you took and consider the workload you took on. Also I don’t a personal statement about being absent because of you have problems because of something you can prevent, your weight, is going to help your application.

Maybe I should change my personal statement and not mention their causes being the fact that I’m overweight? I need to hand in some kind of personal statement to explain my excessive absences and bad grades lol.

What really scares me about the CUNYs is the acceptance rate. They all have 20-30% acceptance rates, which is pretty surprising.
