MIT = eh, maybe.
Carnegie Mellon University = I’d say definitely
Cornell = yep
Columbia = maybe
Ann Arbor = probably
Princeton = maybe
Texas A&M = yes
Purdue - West Lafayette = yes

The thing is with the prestigious schools (MIT, Columbia, Princeton) they aim to create a community at their schools. They take in kids with tons of different backgrounds, GPAs, test scores… The bigger the college, the more seriously they take admissions. For that reason, I’d say you have a pretty nice chance. Your essay (assuming it talks about your mother and her diagnosis) will be a major factor in your applications.

If you do a good job explaining your circumstances (or ask your Guidance Counselor to) I’d say you have a pretty good chance. Make sure that you don’t stress how the experience hindered your marks, but how it made you work harder, how it helped you learn to balance life and school, etc.etc.

did you get into MIT and UIUC?

No and Yes respectively.

They should understand. Did you tell them about it/mention it somewhere? If that is what motivated you to pursue that career path and you’re dedicated to it, then I think that’s excellent.
And MIT, Columbia and Princeton are reaches for everybody haha. xD It’s definitely possible though!
