My Summer Progress Thread

Oh, there’s a difference between shoulder and bench press? What’s the difference?

And man, you guys are benching a LOT of weight. How should I start?

Summer Goals!

Academic:

1) Neuro-Ophthalmology Internship!
2) Neuroscience Summer Camp
3) Read a lot of neuroscience material/research
4) Read a few “classics”
5) Have most of my essays done by the end of August
6) Summer School Work
7) A few college visits
8) Paid job as a Chess tutor
9) Study for MATH II + Physics SAT 2s
10) Some more that I can’t remember right now haha

Personal:

1) Get ripped (I love how that’s a goal for so many of us)
2) Have fun? Nahh…

I see a lot of Math II people and “getting ripped” people :D.

@WorldsBB,

Haha yep. I’ve gotten 1st in the state for my age group, so a lot of people (mostly parents) I know want me to teach their kids. It’s not bad pay considering that most professional chess tutors get $150/hour xD

@IceQube,
Haha exactly! I have a feeling we’ll be seeing each other a lot on CC in the following few months because of application season…what schools are you looking at?

@Emc2Fma:

1) Duke
2) Chapel Hill
3) state school (lols)

Personal

 1. Go to a few volleyball clinics and play often
 2. Get a job if my parents won’t let me go to McGill
 3. Continue racquetball lessons from my mom (who recently won the gold medal at the national championships)
 4. Get ripped (like everyone ese here). I’m already really athletic, but wish I had more visible muscle
 5. Probably watch a ton of movies
 6. Try to hang out with friends at least once a week
 7. Babysit until I get a real job

Bench press is lying down flat on your back bringing the bar down towards your chest then back up. Shoulder press is sitting up straight bringing the bar down towards your shoulders then back up. Dumbbells or barbells can be used for either.

For every exercise try to adjust the weight so you fail at 9-12 reps. 9-12 is the optimal rep range to gain both mass (size) and strength. So for any exercise just use the proper weight, do 9-12 reps, repeat x3, then move on to another exercise. Also, eating a lot of protein is key.

Academic:

1) Study thoroughly for USABO (Campbell’s, Raven Plant, Alberts, and Lehninger)
2) Study thoroughly for the SAT (taking in October)
3) Learn Java (for AP Compsci next year)
4) Governor’s Latin Academy (starting Sunday)
5) Summer@Brown (starting late July)
6) Study through AoPS Volumes 1 and 2 (shooting for AIME qualification)
7) Acquire a research mentor

Personal:

1) Hang out with friends often
2) Play tennis at least 3x a week
3) Keep in shape

Thanks dfree124 for the clarification :)!

Right now, I’m doing Calc BC. I’m using this website:

[Pauls Online Notes : Calculus I](http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcI/CalcI.aspx)

for my calculus BC needs. I’m first going to review the various means of finding area before learning shells (which is technically not BC, but still nice to know).

Heart of Darkness is a sadistic book. Have fun with that.

I have found that I cannot do Calculus while perusing CC and listening to music. Time to shut off the music … but not CC.

And what’s Heart of Darkness about? I kinda figured it was a messed up book judging by the title …

Currently reviewing washer/disk methods of finding volume … I think I need a tattoo on my body reading “change the equation to y equals if the axis of revolution is vertical.”

Academic:
AP Human Geography Course
HOPE ( PE REQUIREMENT) Course

haha i thought your use of lucubrate in that thread was good :). I didn’t know you were that aware of your use of more obscure words…

lols, thanks :). I didn’t know that you knew what lucubrate meant either :p.

Anyway, this calculus studying is BORING. I’m tired. I shall proceed and take a nap :).

Academic:

 1. Study for the SAT, which I will take for the first time in October. My diagnostic tests are around 2040, I ultimately want 2200+

 2. Get tan! Haha and I used to run a lot, hopefully I can start that up again

Let’s see how this goes…

Heart of Darkness is just…hnnnnng. The shortest book i’ve ever read for a class, yet the most confusing. They took it off the course syllabus this year. I can recall the first 15 pages and the last 10, otherwise everything in the middle was extremely pointless.

But maybe i’m biased, considering it’s the worst book i’ve ever read in school (and I like reading books, even school ones).

Hey Weeknd around the AP just PM me for some APES materials. I have a lot of good prep materials for APES that’ll really help you out ;).

I guess we’ll see how I like it :D.

Amazing. I’m totally hopping on board. I’m an incoming Sophomore. My name’s Indigo.
