My Thank You to all the CC Parents!!

To all the parents on CC who have helped me so much over the past...(gosh, how long have I been a member here?) 2 years!?... I thought it would be an appropriate time to write a little note of thanks as the college admissions season for the Class of 2011 winds down.

Basically, I couldn't be headed where I am without all of you. I remember back to when I was deciding where to apply and you guys helped me so much -- suggesting schools, helping me remove poor choices...Heck I wouldn't have even applied to USC-columbia (no less have been a McNair Scholar!!) without cathymee, and that's just one example of all the help I received. When I posted how I couldn't afford college and had many, many posts freaking out about financial aid and where I could get scholarships, etc most of you were nothing but patient and helpful. Even a couple who were like, "Listen up! We're NOT doing all the work for you" helped me tremendously. Just off the top of my head, many thanks to cathymee, jack, eadad, northstarmom, curmudgeon and many others who are escaping my mind at this time.

Thanks for the posts, the replies, the PMs, the searches you did for me, the advice you gave, the prayers...everything. :) Some of you were basically substitute parents for me since neither of mine went to college and didn't have a clue what to do!

All in all, in case I didn't formally tell some of you, I decided on UNC-Chapel Hill (OOS), where I will attend as a Pogue Scholar with free tuition, fees, room, board, and a laptop grant. :D :D :D I also received an outside scholarship for $1,000/year for 4 years that will cover books and other outside ones coming, as well. I was also selected as a McNair Scholar at USC-Columbia (full ride, too), an Ingram finalist at Vanderbilt, and a Robertson finalist at Duke/UNC. I know there are many reasons I was so fortunate, but you all played a HUGE role in giving me advice and direction, especially when I was so panicked. It's amazing not to have any student loans and to be going to my dream school!!

As I finish up my senior year here in Buffalo, it feels weird to be heading so far off to college, but I'm trying to make the time and effort to stop in the midst of the chaos (APs, prom, medical forms, projects, housing forms, dance recitals, etc.) to thank the people who helped me get where I am. Including the wonderful, thoughtful, and ever-helpful parents on CC!!

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!

~GOB~

Wow! Good for you. Did you look at the Ivies? Graduating debt free or near-to is huge!

Gee . . . a full ride to Chapel Hill . . . even though it pains a loyal Demon Deacon to say it, college doesn't get much better than that. Heck - life in general doesn't get much better than that. Congratulations GOB! You've clearly worked very hard and been rewarded accordingly. And you're going to be way outta Buffalo too.

Best of luck!

I think you'll have a great four years. People really like UNC-Chapel Hill, and it's a terrific school academically.

Thank you so much, getouttabuffalo, for coming back to tell us your plans and to thank everyone. A lot of us really remember the kids we help, especially the ones whose personalities really come through as your has.

Much congratulations! Have a ball! Study hard! Enjoy!

And you take the "best of buffalo" with you: the personal "attitude of gratitude" and heartfelt community spirit.

If you dare, remember to pack up some of the good stuff to share with roommates: sponge candy (ugh, I hate that stuff, how 'bout you??) or a bottle of Chiavetta's BarBQ sauce for your new academic advisor.

I know some kids going from here to colleges in North Carolina, and they love it there -- more optimism, jobs and of course, the weather.

Have a great college experience!

Three Cheers! I remember how worried you were about your chances of admission and of financial aid. And now, look at you! Admitted so some terrific school with full rides--and definitely out of Buffalo!

Thanks for updating us. We enjoy knowing that the advice and help we give out is of use. Enjoy the next four years.

Congratulations! What wonderful news!

GOB, I don't believe I ever interacted with you or read your threads but your success story makes me very pleased. CC provides a great forum and people like you prove its worth. Good luck to you...not that it sounds as if you'll need much.

well GetOutta,I'm glad I could help and I'm gratified you came back to say thank you!
I'm kinda sad you won't be a McNair at USC with LuckyMatt, but you made the best decision for you!!
And the best of all, remember how scared and nervous you were about academics/financial aid? What a gift...being able to go through college debt free! Make the most of your opportunities at UNC..and ,come back here to CC and help someone else realize a dream as you have been helped.

Aww thanks for replying guys! All your comments make me a little teary-eyed. :) paying3tuitions, you said it wonderfully when you said to make sure to take the best of buffalo with me...it's so true. we definitely have a great spirit of community here and a sense of gratitude.

and to everyone who has said to make sure I pass on my knowledge, I sure will! I've made several long posts on the UNC forum about the full rides over there, as well as fielding many PMs from other students. its so rewarding to be able to help others -- even just reading essays and giving a tidbit of advice. if you know any rising seniors or other students in general who need advice, feel free to forward them over to me. I'll always be lurking around CC ;-)

subtle bump so more parents can read :)
