My threads keep getting buried. NYU a HUGE reach?

I really need help because I want to know if I should even bother applying to NYU...

Anyway, I'm a white female from California. Here are my stats:

Awards:

Schools:
NYU (ED, possibly? For CAS) (Dream school)
USC (my great uncle, his kids, and their kids all went here. plus he still donates to them big time every year. does that help? haha)
All UC'S (except for UCB, UCLA, AND UCSD)
CSU San Marcos
CSU Long Beach
CSU Northridge
Other CSU's, possibly?

NYU is probably a huge reach as you say. It is also a very expensive school (aside from all the expensive Manhattan distractions) with a mediocre financial aid program.

What is it about NYU that makes it a dream school? There are many excellent colleges and universities aside from NYU east of the Sierra Nevadas (or west of them for that matter). What makes NYU special?

Hi nirvana (that's a really good rock band btw)! I'm happy to chance you ... but can you chance me as well? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/538677-please-chance-me-i-d-really-really-appreciate-2.html

Your grades are pretty weak, and you do demonstrate a downward trend. That will hurt you alot. However, do you have any reasons for that downhill trend? Did you take more advanced classes, such as Honors or AP classes? Or did you have a family issue, i.e. your parents divorced or a loved one died, which disrupted your studies? However, such extenuating circumstances can only go so far. Your SATs are average, as well. You should definitely work on your math skills, even if you're going into Journalism or English. I suggest buying a test prep book that concentrates on math-building skills, especially one from Princeton Review. Your SAT Spanish score is also somewhat low, but I don't think you need to retake your Lit test. A 680 is fine. You clearly demonstrate an interest in Journalism, as you held leadership positions in yearbook for 2 years. Your ECs are also decent. In your app, you should also send the college a link to the website you created. Your awards are few in number and not the most impressive.

Overall, I think that your GPA will hurt you the most, assuming that you improve on the SAT (which should go up by at least 150 points ... that's alot).

Chances:
-NYU: Far reach (GPA kills you here)
-USC: Reach (your legacy will help)
-UCSB: Slight reach
-UCI: Match
-UCM: Safety
-CSU: In

Good luck!

thanks ab2013

yeah, i realize my gpa is weak. i got a 4.0 freshman year, and the reason for that is that i only had one honors class and all regular classes. then starting in sophomore year i took lots of honors/ap's, so it really brought my grades down. plus i started getting heavy into EC's, so i felt like i was drowning.

and i did have a loved one die in tenth grade, actually. i took it pretty hard.

so i guess there are several reasons for the grades. but if i got the SAT up to a 2000, and my spanish SAT II in the 600's/700's, would i have a better shot at NYU?

A 3.75 kills her? Not sure I agree with that one, but I will agree that your SAT does.

She had a 3.5 UW GPA from 10-11, but a 3.75 UW GPA from 9-11. She probably did very well in 9, but her grades slumped after 9. A lower GPA + downward grade trend isn't so good.

If she had a cumulative 3.75 UW, I would say that she's in a very good shape.

Colleges may take it into consideration that you had a loved one die pass away. Write about it in your essays, or ask your counselor to describe your situation in her/his rec. That should help you out more from what I heard from people, but it would have looked alot better if your grades rebounded in your junior year ... but I'm not in your situation, so I wouldn't really know ....

Anyways, I'm really sorry about that!!! When something happens like that, it really sucks....

ok a lot of my friends got into nyu with

3.3-3.8 gpa

and 2000 s.a.t

but then again we live in newyork so it was easier for them to get in
good luck! i'm pretty sure you can get in if you boost your s.a.t grade up to liek 2100

wow, thanks so much guys!

yeah, see i thought if you had somewhere in the 3.3-3.8 range it was in the realm of possibility...because i'm a strong writer and should have good essays.

thanks kevinobrien for the well-wishes. i really want to get in!

i agree ab2013, and i tried REALLY hard my junior year, but i had so much going on, and i was super stressed.

like i said, i'm studying all summer for the october SAT's, so i should be able to make a substantial improvement.

anyone else have any thoughts?

anyone else?

so I'm in at the UC's? For sure?
