My title ends in exclaimation points so you should read this thread right now!!!!!!!!

Hey, so I did a chance me thread about 6 months ago and not all that much has changed this is more for helping me get an idea of which schools I want to apply to.

So far this is my very loose list of colleges:

Stanford
Brown
Cornell
Washington University in St. Louis
Northwestern
University of Chicago
University of Washington

Now I realize the issue here; all of these schools are fairly high reaches apart from U of Washington which I consider a safety. I was thinking that I would apply to 10 schools total with 6-7 of those being reaches, 1-2 being safeties, and 1-2 being matches. Can you guys help me get an idea of which schools would be good safeties/matches for a guy looking to go pre-med?

Here are my stats, I will try to keep it as brief as possible.

GPA: 4.0 UW
SAT: 2060
ACT: 31(.25)
RANK: 1/400 (shared with about 9 people)
CLASS LOAD: Full IB/ Diploma Canidate (hardest course load availible)
SCHOOL: Public (usually 2-3 people get into places like Stanford and MIT so not that good a school)
RACE: White/Native American (o.k so I'm only 1/8 Native American but I recently learned that this is actually a lot so I am actually going to put this on my application and just say 1/8 cherokee as a side note)
LOCATION: Washington
INCOME: Very high I think

EC's:
Varsity Tennis - Captain, top 5 in league, First Team All-League, Letter x4, various other awards
Varsity Cross Country - Letter x2, various awards
Varsity Wrestling - Letter x1 (quit after freshman year)
Volunteering - 40 hours... this seemed like a lot until I got on this site....
Debate
Math Team

Final Notes/thoughts:

I've had a lot of time study SAT/ACT over the summer and based on practice tests am nearly positive that I will get at least a 2250/34 in october and september. Please keep this in mind when saying "no chance whatsover" because of my currently low test scores. I will update or resubmit this thread in a couple months when I have my SAT/ACT results. Also btw I am taking the Math II, Chemistry, and Biology SAT II tests in November and am expecting at least 750 on all.

My teacher rec's should be EXCELLCENT and my essay should be great (I conisder myself quite witty). So basically average on both accounts for the schools I'm applying to...

I have a legacy at Stanford (and at UW not that it matters lol) and will apply early just for the hell of it. I realize I have little to know chance but I like to dream big. My semi-realistic goal is to get in somewhere like Northwestern/ not get rejected by everyone except U of Washington. Anyways please recommend safeties/matches and feel free to critique this as much as you want. Thanks.

P.S: I also have 67000 gamerscore, I should get a scholarship or something for being the perfect jock/nerd/geek hybrid lol

SAT and ACT are horrid, misrepresenting one’s race/ethnicity is a serious charge. Unless you feel that you are more than 12.5% Native American I would not put it down. With such low SAT scores and insignificant EC’s, I would say you have no chances whatsoever except at UW.

^I would agree that his chances at the schools he listed are not good, but relegate the blame to his weak ECs, instead of his test scores. A 2060/31 are obviously going to be in the bottom quartiles for his schools, but as long as he is in the range, he still has a chance.

^67000 gamerscore on xbox??? ur crazy…

^and seriously man- 1/8 native amercian-don’t even put it down. It gives the impression that your trying to hard and most likely that will make no difference in your application.

Lol it’s trying too hard to simply put down that I am 1/8 Cherokee Indian? I’m as much that as anything else. I’m not claiming to be a tribal member or anything, the form asks “how would you describe yourself” and I will be honest about it and say 1/8 Cherokee, 1/8 Irish, 1/8 English, etc. 1/8 is actually more than enough to secure a tribal membership btw.

LOL I love people like this. I bet you have tons of friends huh. Also if you had taken the time to actually read my post instead of just skimming the scores section you would have seen that the entire purpose of it was to ask for suggestions of LESS COMPETITIVE schools that would be good for someone going pre-med to add to their list.

Even I, the biggest downer in the world, know that I have more than a 0% chance at these schools (except Stanford lol). For those of you who are offering constructive criticism and are not self righteous internet pricks, what do you think my chances would be schools like Northwestern or Cornell if I got 2250/34 test scores and decent (750+) subject test scores.

I apologize. I was sorta cranky (and quite priggish). I just hate when people try and use their race as a means of getting accepted at a school, rather than solely based on academic merit. As of now I would suggest schools like Univ. of Texas, Syrcause U., Ohio State (you should be able to get into all of those schools), but if you can bump up your standardized test scores I’d say that UW would be a compelte safety, UChicago, Northwestern, and WUSTL would be high matches / low reaches. Sorry about my last posts :)

No problem dude, I hate when people abuse the race thing also. I was just kind of excited when I saw a couple weeks ago that you could actually get a tribal membership with blood quantum as low as 1/32 or 1/16 Native American blood. I recognize that putting that on my application will make no difference but I figure what the heck right? To me its no different a guy who’s 1/8 black saying he is black (this would be empirically evident unlike my NA heritage).

Thanks for the suggestions, I will start to research them. Stanford, Brown, and Cornell are just on the list for ****s and giggles btw. I’m just hoping that, when my test scores jump, I will get lucky at somewhere like U of Chicago or Northwestern.

P.S: Is UW really not a safety for me now? I’m not saying this with irritation or anything I’m just wondering because I was considering it my only definite saftey as of yet. Probably 20 people get in every year from my less than prestigious high school with much worse stats than me (in my rather biased opinion).

UW is definitely a safety as of now. You are a valedictorian as well as a legacy. Try and find some schools between UW and Stanford so in case your SATs don’t improve too much you will have more of a selection of schools. All the Best!

I was just rereading my post and found about 10 typos… I feel kinda stupid. I’m actually surprised I wasn’t grilled for that.

I don’t want to deviate too far from this discussion, but has anyone wondered why some Asians do not report their race even though their last names are clearly Asian, such as “Chang” or “Lu” or “Zhang”? Can’t colleges just look at the name and generally be able to figure it out?

That would be kinda racist though wouldn’t it? I mean theres no reason why a white couldn’t have the last name Chang. Example: an asian couple adopt a white kid.

Well, I’ve never thought of it that way, but then again, I’ve never heard of Asians adopting a white kid either. Sorry if I misled you into thinking I have something against Asians–I’m one of them. It just ticks me off when they get desperate enough to disown their heritage, for all purposes, something that has defined them and made them who they are, just to get a 5% better chance of getting into Harvard with stats that already blow everyone else away.
