My Transcript Wont Exactly Meet Every Requirement at syracuse: that an issue?

Hey all, I am a current high school junior who just noticed a very important factor in the college process that I need help on. Next fall, one of the colleges I intend to apply to is Syracuse University.

Last night I was reading through the requirements that Syracuse wants to see from the students who apply there, and ran into a big of their issue.

According to collegeboard, Syracuse requires 19 total units: 4 years of Math, 4 years of English, 3 years of Foreign Language, 4 years of Science, 4 years of science, units must be lab, and 4 years of history.

My issue here comes with the science. As I registered for my courses in senior year, I did not consider science at the time because I wish to be a journalism major and science is not involved in my field. Plus, I already took the three major sciences in lab form ( Physics, Chemistry, Biology).

I instead will finish with 4 years of english, 4 years of math, 4 years of language, 3 years of science, 3 years of science units with lab, 4 years of history.

Would it be a problem if my transcript stays this way? I felt 4 years of a language would be much better as many journalism majors have good knowledge of different language. If I can get some feedback today that would be appreciated. If I need to add a 4th year of science, I'll have to talk to my guidance counselor and the vice principle of my school this week.

You Should be fine I was admitted this year with all those requirements expect only 3 years of science and I think only three is required by they recommend four so I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

You were admitted to Syracuse?? Congrats. And thanks for the feedback… Hopefully they would understand why I did that, as I have already taken part in learning the three most important sciences out there.

Thanks and yeah as long as you have the three core sciences bio, chem, and physics I don’t think they would have a problem. You can contact with just in case but I’m sure there is nothing to worry about and the extra year of foreign language would be much more beneficial to your major. Goodluck with admissions and enjoy senior year after you finish apps lol.

Haha yeah, for sure… Will need to get my SAT’s up to a decent range… Syracuse accepts normally between 1550-1740… So if I can get in that range plus with the rest of my transcript ( see my last post if curious) I think I may be in good shape.

From my school the people that get in have sat scores from around 1700-1900ish. What school are you trying to gain admission to at Syracuse.

I am trying to get into the school of communications. My school is sort of well known and colleges know a lot about them… Some got in with low-mid 80 average and 1500-1600 on the SAT… Others are a little higher.

Wow that’s crazy low yeah I come from a very well known public school as well one of the top in our state. But I know Newhouse is very competitive and will not take scores that low it’s averages are much higher than the overall schools averages. Send me a personal message if u want to talk more about this I don’t really wanna hijack ur thread lol.

No problem. Thanks!

It seems to me as if that’s a recommendation, not a requirement. If you’ve taken biology, chemistry and physics, all with lab, and you have no intention of majoring in engineering or one of the sciences, I think you should be OK.

But I’m really just a guy with an Internet connection. If your school has sent a fair number of kids to Syracuse in the past, you might ask your guidance counselor about past applicants’ experience. Or call Syracuse and ask them. They may ask you who you are, but that’s OK. It shows that you’re interested in Syracuse, and working to tailor your high school record to meet the university’s expectations, and not that you’re some kind of slacker who didn’t want to take science. If it’s important, you can probably add a science before school starts in the fall.

Why not just drop a class and take another science and stop worrying about it?

I was accepted to SU this year without taking a science class my senior year, so I wouldn’t worry.
