Hello everyone! I just wanted to share my audition experience for any future applicants, because I know I searched for these before I auditioned.
I auditioned in Chicago this past weekend at a hotel. I checked in, handed them my résumé and headshot, and they gave me a number with a red dot on it. This is how they divided the groups- you either had a red, blue, yellow, or no dot. There was an hour long information session, which wasn’t to convince you to come UCLA. Instead, it was why you SHOULD NOT come, and explained what the BA program is not, and compared it to a BFA program you could find elsewhere. They make it very clear that only 50% of your classes are theatre-related and the rest are “academic” classes.
Next, the parents were asked to leave and they divided the groups up. My group auditioned first. We filled out a card with our play and character’s names for each monologue. They came and got people two at a time, and at my audition, there was only one auditor. I did both monologues without stopping, then she asked me about the contemporary one. She then asked me to do part of it over again, except standing in a corner. That was it, it was quick and painless.
The interviews were all limited to five minutes. The questions asked were not typical interview questions, and most did not pertain to theatre. In fact, one of them was what job would I have if I couldn’t do anything related to theatre at all. The lady I had was polite but very quiet. The interviews took place in a room with two other people interviewing simultaneously, but it was not loud.
The movement audition was the weird part. I don’t want to say too much because I think it’s best if you experience it without expectations, but they said that this part was to help us more than hurt us. It wasn’t hard or too tiring.
I met a group of people that were really fun and nice to talk to, and everyone was very supportive of each other. I had a good experience overall!
