My counsler told me yesterday that "A national merit scholarship is just like Who's Who, it really means nothing in college admissions."
She also that I should apply to a community college "just in case" I don't get into any 4-year colleges.
I then had to explain to her what the common application is.

Anyone else have a useless guidance counselor?

High school counselors, for the most part, are useless. They're only there for the kids who get into trouble frequently. Ask some of your teachers... they usually know much more than your gc.

Your guidance counselor should be fired. My counselor is knowledgeable and nice, but maybe your's is also being realistic if she has seen your scores (of maybe she hasn't and most people at your school do go to community college and so she is just guessing), but w/e you should be talking to your teachers and some older friends who have already graduated if you ahve any questions abotu college.

My guess is that you could learn more HERE than from your guidance counselor. But I'd advice placing yourself in her favor anyway, because gc's usually write recommendations on college applications ;)

What schools is she telling you this about? I mean National Merit to a CA school she is accurate. NM to an IVY.....could be said. What schools are on your list......this would help a bit more in your discussion. Not a very helpful thing for your GC to tell you without some additional comment or instruction. How many college counselors are there at your school? Is this opine the prevailing thought? Have you been at this school all of your HS career?

My gc is a clueless ditz. I'm planning on writing an article for the school newspaper that talks about the serious lack of help, reliability, and information of our guidance department. This will be a collaborative effort with the other editors, assistant editors, of course., and we're holding off on writing it until we're all safely into college, lol:)
