My Waitlist, Rolling Admission, and Tranfer Options

I’ve gotten myself into an unfortunate predicament, and I need some advice regarding my options. Out of the eleven colleges I applied to, ten rejected me, and I was waitlisted at my “safety,” Boston University. I’m taking steps to convince BU to admit me, but I need a few other schools I'm confident will accept me so I have the peace of mind that I’ll be going somewhere for college rather than taking a gap year.

As a general consensus, what are the best rolling admission colleges in the Northeast still accepting applications? I’ve seen the lists of all the colleges, but it would be helpful if someone could give me a very narrow list, perhaps the five best (I’ve been told I’m only allowed to apply to two, so preferably the two best). I’d prefer it was a medium-sized school, probably under 15,000 students but more than 5,000.

My next question is, would it be better for me to try to transfer to a more “elite” school from the best school that will accept me? For instance, if I am admitted to Boston University, is my chance for transfer to a school such as Tufts or Brown better than at a rolling admission college?

I know it’s not a good idea to go into college already with a mind to transfer, but I have a few colleges that I would still very much like to attend, regardless of the fact they’ve already rejected me. I don’t feel I’ll benefit or be comfortable in a school I’m very reluctant to go to.

To tell you the truth; there are probably no rolling/late admission schools that are better/more prestigious than your safety BU (which I assume you would rather not go to over any of the other 10). University of Pittsburgh is not a bad option.

No, its always harder to transfer into a school than getting in ED/RD. If you were really rejected at ten schools, you may have a flaw whether academic or character or you have vastly overestimated your chances for admission.

Well, these are the ten schools I applied and was rejected to: Harvard, Yale, Brown, UPenn, Dartmouth, Cornell, Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, Boston College, and Princeton.

Considering the admission for all of those schools is highly unpredictable and the record number of applications, I wouldn’t say it’s so surprising I was denied. I only have a 2050 SAT score and a 31 ACT, which aren’t very impressive for those schools.

I am, however, retaking the SATs, and I’m taking two AP exams in a few weeks. I plan to start the preparation for transfer this summer by actually visiting a few colleges.

If anyone has any other specific tips for transferring, they would be most welcome. I’ve been reading every helpful post I can find on the transfer board.

Through this entire process, I’ve realized how little I knew about applying to colleges.

I’m sorry about your predicament… I don’t think it’s evidentiary of a character flaw, though it certainly promotes the lesson that more than one safety school is necessary…

According to [Late & Rolling Deadline Schools](Late Deadline Schools: Finding one and getting in with a great college essay) Columbia is accepting applications until 7/1…
Then there’s Rhodes College, which is a step down from what you’re looking for but still something to think about… rolling
Roger Williams… rolling
UPitt… rolling

And well, there are about a hundred bazillion on that list. Good luck. Wish you the best.

Maybe you should have applied to umass amherst, you probably would of gotten into the honors program/commonwealth college. The same thing happened to my friend, but he got into commonwealth college. However, it is probably too late to apply there.

Rhodes College is definitely not rolling admission. I think that Peterson’s list is a bit out of date.

Penn State (US News 48 - SAT 1090-1300, 51% admit, 35,000 Undergrads, 32% Out-of-state)
Pittsburgh (US News 59 - SAT 1150-1340, 56% admit, 17,000 Undergrads, 25% Out-of-state )
Rutgers (US News 59 - SAT 1090-1300, 56% admit, 26,000 Undergrads, 10% Out-of-state)
SUNY Binghamton (US News 82 - 1180-1350, 39% admit, 11K Undergrads, 10% Out-of-state)
SUNY Stony Brook (US News 96- 1080-1280, 43% admit, 15K Undergrads, 8% Out-of-state)
SUNY Buffalo (US News 118 - 1040-1260, 52% admit, 18K Undergrads, 7% Out-of-state)

I’d call each one to see if they are still taking applications (Rolling means they admit until they are filled). I’d seriously consider Pittsburgh which attracts a lot of good students by offering scholarships and has a very good honors program which you can probably get into eventually. You can probably find good peers at all of them because there are many good students who go to these schools for financial reasons.

Good Luck

No offense, but I probably could have seen this coming. With a 2050 SAT off the bat (not knowing your other info or ECs) many of the top 25 schools are almost out of reach. I would have applied to more schools in the BU range.

To slipper1234: Your post was a bit offensive and hurtful. I was encouraged to apply to the schools that I did; the schools in the “BU range” don’t interest me.

Thank you to everyone else who gave suggestions. Luckily, I did get off the waitlist at Boston University. My next goal is to successfully transfer after freshman year, hopefully to Brown.

If anyone has tips for that, I would love for your input!

Congratulations on getting in off the waitlist at BU. You might end up really enjoying it there.
