myBama?

Great! Thanks to you both for the clarification. You’re right. It is a little misleading. Doesn’t look like she can apply for scholarships or the honors college until we get the mybama email…or does she first have to be accepted to apply for honors? All so confusing! Will follow up with an email or a phone call to the school in the morning but hopefully the login info will come tomorrow and she can get going on the scholarship portion. How involved are these two applications? I wish we could see the questions (or essay) ahead of time so she could just cut, paste and submit. :|

Your D can apply for scholarships as soon as she gets the email. However, application to the Honors College is done after acceptance. However, if she wants to apply to Fellows, which has a deadline coming up, she needs to contact Mrs. Wellon Bridgers at wlbridgers@ua.edu for an extension and to get those essay prompts emailed to you in advance. (Note that Wellon is a female. You can also call Wellon directly. She is super nice and helpful. 205-348-5522)

As for the questions…

For UHP, I think the essay is:

Write a short essay about yourself, your career goals, and the way in which you expect the University Honors Program to enrich your academic experience at The University of Alabama. The essay provides us with an opportunity to get to know more about you. The UHP admits students based on the test and scholarship criteria stated above.

Can someone else correct this if this isn’t right and also post what the IHP essay prompt is?

There are no essays for most of the scholarship app. There are a some essays required for some unique scholarships, but for the college-wide scholarships and many department scholarships, no essays are needed. Those are awarded typically awarded by stats.

NJ mom…

Do you know which scholarships your D will qualify for?

Did she put down a major on her app? Some majors give additional scholarships.

Does anyone know what the essay prompt is for UHP and IHP? I think that the UHP prompt is:

Write a short essay about yourself, your career goals, and the way in which you expect the University Honors Program to enrich your academic experience at The University of Alabama. The essay provides us with an opportunity to get to know more about you. The UHP admits students based on the test and scholarship criteria stated above.

Is that right?

But, I don’t know what the essay prompt for IHP is.

IHP prompt:

Briefly describe your interest in international study and experiences. Please mention what foreign language you intend to study and where you might like to study abroad. Explain how the International Honors Program relates to your career goals. The IHP admits students based on the test and scholarship criteria stated above.

Thanks! :)

A few more questions:

Does the School of A&S offer any additional scholarships? Anything for Political Science majors?

And this is unrelated, but is it advisable for students to bring cars? How’s the parking situation at UA?

Thanks again.

From what I’ve heard, it is rare to get additional scholarships in A&S when you are already getting a University Scholarship. If you attend enough of the lesser attended sports games, you may win a scholarship they give out there, but that is unlikely too. Since you didn’t receive one of the big academic scholarships, you will be feeling the tuition and housing cost increases big time. Apply for all local scholarships you are eligible for.

Parking at UA is supposedly the best in the SEC, but people complain a lot about it. Both of my suitemates have cars and seem to enjoy it, but remember that parking tickets are $50-$250 each. When I first visited UA, my mom got a parking ticket. Luckily, we were technically off-campus so the fine was $15. Driving from AZ would be an adventure, but it will intrigue people. I still have to convince people that a 37 hour nonstop drive home is not my idea of fun. While I know students on campus have vehicles the drove form Texas or Montana, I don’t recommend it unless you really want to. Of course, you could always buy a car in AL and register it in AZ.

Freshmen can bring cars, if they want. As with most colleges, there never seems to be enough parking. However, the school has been building more and more parking structures. The new Ridgecrest South Residence hall is actually built on top of a parking structure for the hall’s residents (the hall is built on a hill, so the parking structure isn’t visible from the front. It’s quite a sight from the back - multi levels of parking with a residence hall on top)

Resident students who bring cars, often park them and leave them for as long as possible. To get around campus or the off-campus hangouts on University Drive, they use the Crimson Ride, ride bikes, or walk. Having a car on campus is not required.

As for A&S having any scholarships (poly sci in particular). I really don’t know what they offer. On the A&S website, I found this…

Scholarships are awarded at the University level, at the college level, and at the level of the academic department or program level. While there are different sources of scholarships, there is one application and one deadline, December 1. The scholarship application is included in the admissions materials provided to students. If it is necessary to provide any additional material, the information concerning this is noted on the scholarship application and on the UA scholarship website, scholarships.ua.edu.

The UA Scholarship Office is the best source of information on University level scholarships and can be reached at 205.348.8201. For information on College of Arts and Sciences scholarships, please contact the A&S Student Services Center at 205.348.5970 or email studentservices@as.ua.edu.

In awarding College and departmental scholarships, the College of Arts and Sciences is guided by the wishes of the scholarship donor. In selecting students who meet the criteria established by the donor, we consider high school grades, college entrance test scores, and accomplishments of the student. Scholarships may be awarded for one year or for multiple years.

So, it looks like there are some A&S scholarships, but I wasn’t able to find a list.

Sea_Tide is right. With the exception of the Engineering scholarships, the other scholarships aren’t usually awarded to students who have already been given big scholarships. However, if you’re only getting one of the smaller scholarships, then I have heard of those students getting additional scholarships.

mom2

She should get the Collegiate Scholar based on her stats and once she fills out the honors college app, entry there, but not sure of any merit $$ associated with the honors college. I’m not 100% sure what she put down for her major. She wants to eventually become a physical therapist so might be athletic science, athletic training, or kinesiology. Not certain.

I think if you go into MyBama, it will say what her recorded major is.

Various departments and colleges give additional scholarships, so the choice of major can make a difference. If your D needs to change her major now, she can do so by calling 1800-933-Bama 2262 or if she’s been accepted, she should be able to change her major in MyBama - there is a link - I think it may be in the Academics tab, in the left column.
