I'm -8.25 in both eyes...got glasses since first grade. I'm blind as a bat if my glasses are taken away =/

Personally I think it's all genetics tho.

"In some countries, such as Japan, Singapore and Taiwan, up to 44% of the adult population is myopic." -- Wikipedia.

Hey but there's some good news for myopes:

"Many studies have shown a relationship between myopia and IQ. According to Arthur Jensen, myopes average 7-8 IQ points higher than non-myopes."

Probably because those with higher IQ are more likely to find studying productive, rather than studying helping with IQ.

Indeed, genetics determine your IQ, and parents also influence your studying habits.
Of course, I can see how genetics can influence eyesight independently of IQ - some people can study and go on the computer for pretty much their entire lives, and still have near-perfect vision. Wah.

I'm -4.75 in one, -4.50 in the other. Wow though - you're at some risk of retinal detachment. That's scary...

Yeah, 1 in 20, according to Wikipedia. Hopefully I'm not so "lucky"...my myopia is starting to settle down though. I progressed -1.0 in 4 years compared to my elementary/middle school years...when I'd go -1.0 every single year. Hopefully if I last another 3 or 4 years I won't ever get to -10.0...though I've met at least 5 people who were like that (one even -12.0).

Your right, I believe read an article in some scientific magazine maybe american or discover but i remember that it mentioned that individuals with myopia have a higher intellect.

Wow, -8.25? That's intense. And I thought I had it bad. -4.75 Left/-5.25 Right. I'm sure it got worse though, because my contact lenses are somewhat failing me.

I'm nearsighted, but I'm not sure exactly how much. It's a lot, though. I got glasses in 1st grade and I still wear them...Haven't gone to the eye doctor's in a year or two though. My myopia progressed really fast when I was younger but as I got into middle/high school I think it slowed down.

My father is very VERY nearsighted and my mom has near-perfect vision. XD

i'm definitely not in high school anymore, but i had to chime in:
i'm -6.75 and -6.25, but my sister (who is in high school) and brother have perfect vision. not fair!

I'm -7.00 and -6.00, steadily declining since I was 13. I was a -2.5 and a -2.75 five years ago...it's kind of depressing. I also have astigmatism. I've been wearing glasses since I was 9, but I really needed them when I was 8. Contacts since age 13.
