MYTH: Colleges only accept X kids from your school?

Anyone know if that statement hold an validity? Coming from a Catholic high school, many of my friends and classmates are applying to basically the same Jesuit/Catholic colleges I'm applying to.

I've heard people say that this will basically screw most people over. I really hope this is false.

theoretically, yes. schools aim for top 10% and unless you’re all top of the class, everyone won’t get in. Ivy leagues can only accept so many due to space, but schools with connections can get up to 30 kids accepted.

Some Catholic high schools have special connections with certain catholic colleges. Here, there’s a school named St Xavier which I believe sends a disproportionately large number of students to the local (Jesuit) Xavier University. If a lot of students at your school are applying to a school like that, no problem. If a lot of students from your school are applying to Georgetown and Notre Dame and other selective Catholic/Jesuit schools, and you don’t go to connected high schools (eg: Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School), then you might be a slight disadvantage, but these schools are so selective anyway that it won’t make a huge difference.

Thanks guys, actually I know of two Catholic colleges that generally accept a large amount of kids from our school. (One of which we do dual-enrollment with). And I’m not applying to the “top” Jesuit universities, more like Holy Cross, Villanova and well maybe even Boston College (which I think is considered top). It kinda sucks, especially when you think you’re going to get an edge doing EA/ED, I found out that almost everyone at my school is too!

Not to worry. Our HS is not even Catholic and St Joe (which you should consider) accepted over 30 kids last year and Villanova over a dozen.

Good luck

There are like literally 3 St. Joe’s. I got a free app from one, lol which one are you talking about it?

The myth that colleges have an absolute quota for each school is untrue. However, it’s true that having highly qualified peers at one school hurts all their chances.

The top Jesuit colleges are Georgetown, BC, and Holy Cross.
