Your friend simply had either low SAT scores, a bad reputation, bad letters of reccomendation, bad essay, or bad ECs.

This statement can be used for ANYONE rejected from ANY SCHOOL. It proves nothing.

Yeah, but I specifically used it on someone who got rejected by 13 schools.

Being rejected by 13 schools means something.

All I'm saying is that one extreme case doesn't mean that college admission is completely random and bull****.

Anyone who got rejected from any school was rejected for a reason.

You say we have to accurately know the admissions process in order to estimate a person's chances, but that's not true.

Oh, and I wasn't trying to prove anything. I was just stating the facts.

Flippy, just because you've posted 692 times on CC doesn't mean you know ANYTHING about college admissions. you have about the same ability to estimate chances as my little sister.

and LETS STOP DEBATING ABOUT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION! god i'm tired of this debate on CC. ITS A FACT OF LIFE THAT COLLEGES WANT DIVERSITY, SO URMs MIGHT HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING IT. GET OVER IT.

it sucks. its not fair. but can we stop fighting about it please?

Schools want to present their students with the real world. Going to college around people who are out there in the real world is vital for education.

So schools admit people who are rich, middle class and poor. They try to make the class half male and half female. They try to make the student body reflect that of the real world. So if the real world is 12% african-american, the school will try to make their student body 12% african american.

Now if you don't like this, too bad. Get over it. The elite, white males have dominated everything for most of history in the developed countries anyways, so get over the fact that education now reflects the real world.

myth: chances threads are cool.

fact: remix the above myth, and you have your fact. jack.

"Flippy, just because you've posted 692 times on CC doesn't mean you know ANYTHING about college admissions. you have about the same ability to estimate chances as my little sister."

You claim that I know absolutely nothing about college admission? You are a freaking moron. And this is an internet forum: people can debate about whatever-the-**** they want to you dick head.

Who said my post count has anything to do with my knowledge of people getting into college? Just SHUT the fark up. I can just as easily say that YOU don't know ANYTHING about judging one's ability to estimate college chances.

Hey kids, no name-calling.

I can't believe you said "fark", flippy.

whoa flippy, calm down.

you're right. i dont know anything about estimating anyone's chances at admissions. none of us, including yourself, do.

and next time, try to back up your argument, rather than just calling me a moron and saying 'fark'

ok?

MYTH: When someone tags "no offense" onto the beginning of their comment, they intend to foster intellectual debate and stimulate conversation while insuring that no feelings are hurt.

FACT: When someone tags "no offense" onto the beginning of their comment, they hate you. No exceptions.

myth: this thread was about affirmative action

fact: this thread was about myths/facts related specifically to elite college admissions

question: how do legacies work? if you list a relative, do they look at how well they did and judge you based in that?

Sorry for the ignorance, but what is RSI/TASP?

Myth: (as someone previously mentioned) Colleges select students to proportionally reflect the real world.

Fact: This is far from the truth, any data, or common sense. The student body does not proportionally reflect the 'racial' or 'ethnic' groups of the United States.

Myth: The Affirmative Action debate has not been beaten dead over a hundred thousand times, especially on College Confidential, usually with minorities oddly supporting AA and white/asians oddly against it.

Myth: CCers are a bunch of clueless high schoolers who are just as confused as you are about the college admissions process and asking for admissions information would be the equivalent of asking a chimpanzee for medical advice.

Fact: 90% of CCers are a bunch of clueless high schoolers. There are plenty of parents, administrators, college reps, adcoms and college students who have been through the process on the forum who can give very useful and helpful advice. As with all internet forums, advice must be taken with a grain of salt, and one must use his or her own reasoning and analytical skills to determine if so-and-so is a crack pot or someone who can provide much-needed insight.

Amazing what you learn here (and what you don't learn from your own high school!) I thought CTY was a good acronym but then I learned it meant nothing to college admissions counselors. So here's a myth, fact;

MYTH: Participation in exclusive CTY summer programs looks good for college.
FACT: Smart rich kid whose parents can afford the high price tag - a dime a dozen.
