^^ Thanks angie, I know in “applied” anthropology you can actually work in PR or business. But I just know that there are advantages if going the traditional route of communications. I wish I was never accepted to LA than I wouldn’t have to make this choice =[

@ MeStudy: Ok thanks. Yeah that makes a lot of sense too. The main selling point to me for Davis(besides the major) was the cheap rent and the whole small-town-feel that I think I could have appreciated for a while. But I just still don’t know.

But like I said, I’ve heard that there are many internship opportunities with LA, especially with all the PR firms in the area. I’m sure that’s where the “affiliation” comes into play that LA has with all these firms, internships etc. I know that if I can get an internship with a PR firm, my degree is not going to matter so much anymore. And for what it’s worth, I was an account executive for 4 years and did lots of damage control, building client bases and all that. Maybe if I go find a job in PR with an anthro degree maybe that will look good to them?

Would you prefer living in LA as opposed to Davis? I’m under the impression that it would be awesome to live in Davis. Please change my mind =]

Honestly, I think the cheap rent and small town vibe is simply a mechanism that you used to help justify going to a school that you may not completely love. LOL I’m just kidding

But seriously, the cheap rent thing is a bit odd(just my opinion of course), simply because the whole point of going to a good school is to get a good job. The small savings in rent relatively can potentially mean a huge difference in income over a life time. Not saying the school alone will do that, but I mean the industry, or simply the breadth of opportunities trump what Davis is able to provide for you. Also, what I meant by “affiliation” is not bound by the relationships the campus has previously established, but it is the name itself(prestige as you mentioned before) that will help you become much more competitive against the other students from other schools in any general situation.

Small town vibe isn’t exclusive to the college student stage in your life. Don’t let it get in the way of making decisions that ARE exclusive to this point in your life. Small towns can be enjoyed anytime, you go to your dream UC ONCE(for undergrad of course lol)!

@ Mestudy: LOL, you’re actually absolutely right about me justifying going to Davis. I would have never admitted it or realized it if you didn’t say what you did. lol. I guess I was worried that I wouldn’t get into SD or LA so I just hyped Davis up so much. Also, if I don’t end up going to grad school I guess UCLA would look more competitive on a resume than UCD would. Thanks again everyone! I just hope I don’t have more second thoughts between now and June 1st.

Do you currently live in LA as well? How would you compare Davis with LA? I have never been to Davis.

LOL I knew iiiittt!!

Grew up in LA, moved to Davis for work. Stayed there for 2 years literally a mile away from the campus, then came back to LA. Outside of campus, you’re seeing cows and farms. Want to go to Sacramento? drive 20-30min. Want to go to SF? drive 1.5hrs. I’m not too sure how I would describe it, coming from LA I can do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted to do it. When I came to Davis, your only chance to do anything is house parties and then the next weekend experience the joys of being robbed. Downtown Davis is a few blocks(not a few blocks away, I mean it is made up of a few blocks! lol I’m exaggerating) that all close after a certain time. blah blah

In Davis, everyone is a student and that got old quick for me. There is clearly an identity that Davis has, and its based off all these people who go to UCD. If you’re in LA there is so much to do, you don’t see people as students simply filling their time with bs between classes. Outside of campus, you’re a person, that does things, that has shiz to do. Trust me I’m not even a partier guy or whatever, but there is a bit of cabin fevere-ish-ness(:D) that happened to me when I lived there that I have never experienced living in LA. Sorry if I’m saying negative things, just really stating my experience and opinion.

^^^ LOL. Good enough for me. Thanks a lot, appreciate it =]. What’s funny is I kind of also justified going to Davis because they have an indoor rock-wall(and rock-walls are bad as$). But what do ya know, UCLA has one too! lol!

Also, my buddy is a genius at the apple store and can almost guarantee me a job at another store. The closest store to Davis would be in Sacramento, and if it’s 30 mins away than that would be a problem. The apple store on 3rd street is only like 3 miles from UCLA =]

Also, being able to go see my parents whenever I want is a plus too.

Good on ya mate! Try this, go to google maps and write in davis, ca. Make sure to have satellite on so you can experience all that Davis has to offer in its entirety. Compare it to Los Angeles, ca. Mind Blown

LOL. Yeah I’ve seen it. There’s a lot of brown areas, aka nothing. I currently live in LA(20 mins from UCLA) so I guess in the back of my head I kinda knew what I was getting into if I moved to Davis. lol. Thanks again for the advice everyone!

Just of curiosity, do we have to SIR in order to send transcripts to UCLA by June 1? Or can we send them anyways without SIRing initially?

Question guys. When I have my ccc send my IGETC certification to UCLA, they are going to send my transcripts right? So do I still need to wait until the end of the spring semester to do that if my IGETC is already complete w/o the classes I’m currently taking?

Also since my ccc is sending my transcripts with the IGETC cert. do I need to send transcripts a second time(not including after the Spring)?

^ IGETC certification and transcripts are separate no?

I hope UCLA’s admission packet comes today (:

@iDizzle
okay dude. i have worked all over the world. and i can tell you, that from where i am sitting, anyone who would even consider going to Davis over UCLA is unaware about some important changes in the modern world. the “branding” of a school is so overwhelmingly important that i cannot even begin to describe it to you. of course there is also the component that people in other parts of the world have never heard of Davis (a great school by the way)—and those people would literally kill to have even the chance to apply to UCLA.

UCLA has the branding. it is one of the “New Ivy Leagues” and last year was harder to get into than UCB. a BA major is far less important than people might realize. any BA from such a competitive school tells anyone who reads your CV that you were chosen from a massive pool of applicants to attend one of the most desirable schools in the United States and the world. i have no interest in debating stuff like housing, or convenience, that is moot. this is something that will stick with you forever and if you have to deal with a little inconvenience or live in a smaller place, i could care less.

this is no reflection on davis, davis is a fabulous school, but UCLA has greater prestige and frankly that is what school is about, because there is nothing you can learn in school that you can’t learn somewhere else. so don’t underestimate the little piece of paper you will get at the end of this four year journey. good luck dude!

Just of curiosity, do we have to SIR in order to send transcripts to UCLA by June 1? Or can we send them anyways without SIRing initially?

@ northbeach: haha. Thanks man. Yeah after all the debate I decided that I will attend UCLA and see how everything plays out =]

my school does not send both transcripts and IGETC together. they require those to be ordered separately with individual forms. but i can guess that you can request that they be sent together? good luck!

@iMunster: I’m not too sure. I guess they are, but I know that my ccc will submit my transcripts along with the IGETC certificate(aren’t transcripts required for the IGETC cert.?) Not sure.

North, can you chime in on this? I know you’ve been giving those IGETCs away like they’re free. lol

@iDizzle
what a relief. do it for the board, as justine might say. haha

^^ Oh ok. I will double check this week.

@Philo: I’m not sure but I think it would be ok to do it simultaneously. I think if you SIR and send your transcripts around May 15 you’ll be safe because they should receive the transcripts by June.

@ north:LOL. Yeah thanks again to everyone who helped me make my decisions. Although this IS a biased thread. hahah
